Get Involved In both this academic year, but remember why you came to college In the first i^ce. JONI SMITH Editor in Chief Welcome back Meredith students, faculty and staff to what I'm sure will be anoAer bannCT year our school. We have much to look fcMward to diis year, includ ing the completion of the hi^ly-publicized math and science building, the addition of new fecuhy and stafi^ a newly remodeled BeeHive, engaging ^>eakers at convocaticMis, mttsic and dance concerts, campus sports and fH- sMne of you, Comhuskin'. Students will have many opportunities to become involved in dozens of oiganizations on campm. The first fting I noticed when I came to Meredith was how excited everyone was to get me involved in some type of club. I recall my student advisor calling me at home before I moved into &e residence hall to tell me ^ut the clubs I should join. To my sur prise, however, when I asked her about the differ- bmmmh ent classes Meredith had to offer and ^«4iat interestii^ electives I might like to take, she told me ^e would a^ someone else and call me back lata*. The moral of tiliis stoiy is that Meredith is a great place to be. I have no doubt &at Mereditii is Ae only school for me; I wouldn't transfer for anything. Hoover, I believe many I hm DO doubt that MerMUth is the only school tor me; I wouldn't transfer for anything. However, I believe many iMople on this campus place too much emphasis on extracurricular activities and not enough on academics. 99 pec^le m diis campus place too much emphasis on extracurricular activities and not enough on academics. After all, we are here to learn so that we can become better people and acquire Ae skills it takes to succeed in the real wiM'ld. We are not here to ^)end all of our time selling doughnuts, washing cars, pdnting faces and designii^ t-shirts. In the next few weeks, when you are approached by endiusias- tic presidents of the various campus clubs, make SUre you put academics fi«t before sibling up to be your resi dence hall’s t-shirt desigi^r or C(»nhuskin’ co-chair. When you go out to get a real job or begin to apply to graduate schools, no one is realty going care that you were Ae word "jump” in the Comhuskin' skit or that you created an airplane with Pepsi cans during can art. However, they will care that you took substantive courses and performed well in them. They will care that you got to know a professor well and woriced on an in- depth research project with him or her. Tli^ will care that you double-majorcd or spent a semester abroad. However, I AiiUc h is important 1o become involved on campus, so I'm not ruling out Comhuskin* entirely. I think it is more important to become involved in a few organizations that are important to you and still maintain solid grades rather than joining every club Mereditii has to off» while ttyii^ to fit h»neworic and studying into your schedule.
