Meredith Performs Theatre production was a hit Meredith Performs Theatre production of And Then Thoy Came for Mb delivers a powerful message of remem- berance and educa tion. NINA BORUM Staff Writer Meredith Performs Theatre put on a prodcution of James Still’s And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank. The production, was the winner of the 2000 American Alliance for Theatre and Education Award. And Then They Came for Me breaks new ground as a historic newsreel brought to life on the stage. This mov ing multimedia play weaves videotaped inter views with Holocaust sur vivors Ed Silverberg and Eva Schloss with live actors and actresses recreat ing scenes from their lives during World War U. It will stay witii you for the rest of your life. Some may have per ceived the prodcution’s focus to be on Anne Frank and her particular experi ence. However, the play cen tered on the lives of two families and a Hitler youth that Anne Frank wrote about in her diaiy. Silverberg was Anne Frank’s first boyfriend, who barely escaped the Nazis before going into hiding in Belgium for over 2 years. Schloss was the same ^e as Frank and her family went into hiding on the same day at the Frank fam ily On Schloss’s fifteenth birthday, her &nily was arrested by Nazis and deported to concentration campus. She and her moth er survived the Holocaust. Schloss’s mother married Otto Frank after World War II. The production crews worked extensively on the sceneiy, costumes, lighting, house management and publicity for the produc tion. Scenic Construction Crew member Chantay Josey comments, "It was such a great learning expe rience. I've done theatre for years and have an apprecia tion for acting...but being able to work behind the scenes has helped me to fully appreciate the process of putting on a production. The audience sees the set as a whole and can appreci ate costumes and lights, but being behind the scenes I can see things that no one ever gets to see... like chalking and measuring lines. It's veiy humbling, I even learned what a radio arm saw was!" The actors portrayed their characters accurately Real life footage of Holocaust survivors and authentic photos were quite impressive. Students Affini Woodley and Tasha Farrior simultaneously responded, "It's definitely not what we expected!" Farrior said the audio commentary was a not what she expected because she anticipated more dia logue from the performers. Brie Boynton remarked, "It was a moving play, I cried!" The play provided important fects throughout the dialogue and the video commentary. The audience leamed about restrictions placed on Jews and their living conditions. They also leamed about die Holocaust through the eyes of a Hitler youth and how the boys were being brainwashed and didn't even realize it. The last words printed on the audio screen and on the program were " Take heed...lest you foi^et the things which your eyes have seen, and...teach them to your children and to your children's children.” (Deut4:19). AppleTree Theatre described And Then They Came for Me as “part oral- history, party dramatic action, part direct address, and part remembrance.”
