5 CAMrUS SPORTS Another victory for Meredith soccer The soccer team continues its winning sliwak with a 9-1 victory over Averetl University. AMANDA SMITH Staff Writer The soccer team's win ning streak continues as they recorded a 9-1 victory over Averett University on Sunday September 21. TTie Angels clearly con trolled the game and every one on die team saw play ing time. Assistant Coach Leigh Ann Hasse stated, "We dominated the whole game and it was a well deserved Th& Angels attacked ^ aggressively from the beginning as they quickly moved the ball down the field to earn a comer kick in the opening minutes. Freshman Margot Childs served the kick into the goal area ^d senior captain Annie Palmquist directed the ball into the back of the net for Meredi&'s first goal. The scoring contin ued as junior Katie Fuller used her speed to earn a break away and beat die Averett keeper for the sec ond goal of the game. "It's always fun to have games where a lot of peo ple score. We were all very excited because this is the highest ^ring game we've had all season," stated jun ior Leslie Bloem. Also scoring for Meredidi were junior Marci Strathmeyer and sopho more- Malloiy Hancock, who had two goals each, and freshmen CJ Barefoot and junior Ashley Ellis. Palmquist also contributed another goal giving her two goals overall for the game. The Angels' defense never allowed Averett the opportunity to create any sort of offensive attack. Averett's only goal came from a miscommunication in the Angels defense, which resulted in an own goal against the Angels. “We knew that we were a better team, yet we had to continue to execute our game plan as if we were down seven goals instead of up seven," commented Hancock. '*We record another win and immediately start focusing on our next oppo nent. We will do what it takes to keep this winning stre^ alive," stated Palmquist. Meredith will face Greensboro College in Greensboro on Friday Sept. 26. The next home game will be Oct. 2. Isabel interfered with volleyball and tennis AUTUMN METZGER Staff Writer Hurricane Isabel wreaked a lot of havoc on many college campuses last Thursday and Friday. Th6 positive effect for students was cancelled classes on Thursday; however, school cancellations forced the rescheduling of a volleyball game and canceled tennis and soccer practice. The Angel volleyball team was scheduled to have an away match at Salem College on Thursday. Luckily, Isabel did not strike earlier in the week so the Angels did get to com pete Tuesday in a home match against Pitt Community College. It was a hard fought match, but the Angels pulled out the victory, 3-2. The match started off slow ly with both teams playing evenly. After the first eight points, the Angels kicked it into high gear and quickly won the next two games. In the third match, Pitt rallied to barely beat the Angels for the next two games. With two tied games apiece, the Angels pulled out tile win by four points (11-15) in the fifth and fmai game. The volleyball team’s next game is in Georgia. They leave on Thursday for a weekend tournament. The next home match is October 6 at 7 p.m. The t^is team also had a game this week; they played against Greensboro College on last Wednesday in an away game. The ten nis team won the match 8- 1, making their official record now 1-0. They will travel this weekend to the Memorial Tennis Tournament to play at 3 p.m., 8 a.m., and 8 a.m. Tlieir next game is February 26 at 3 p.m. Look for more tennis coverage in next week’s Herald.
