4 CAMrUS NEWS Sociology and Social Work clubs sponsor second annual box a tlion CRYSTAL DAVIS Staff Writer For the second con> secutlve year, the Soclolo^ and Social Work ciubs sponsored a box a thon to raise money for homeless chil dren to attend camp. The box-a-thon was held to raise money for Scottie's Place, a camp to help homeless children. Starting at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 17 and ending at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 12 Meredith students spent the chilly, rainy night in cardboard appliance boxes in the courtyard between Brewer and Heilman Residence Halls. Some of the 23 students invovled stayed a portion of the time allotted. Senior Jenn Schwachenwald, Sociology Club president; Shannon McNally, Social Work Club president, and various others were among the students who endured the wet night living as if they were homeless. The students had food donated for the cause and various other accom modations. The Sociology Club, Social Work Club, Psychology Club and Psi Chi, in association with the Meredith Association for the Education of Young Children (MAEYC), spon sored the event collecting donations for the students' all-expense paid night in large appliance boxes (some of which caved in due to the rain). Some stu dents stayed only a few hours while others stayed through the night weather ing the rain, playing games, carving pumpkins and enjoying the fellowship of other students. In her last year at Meredith and her children in the United States, inspired Schwachenwald to help raise money for the organi zation. She said, "It takes time, but it’s worth it. We just want to have a good time and raise money for these kids." She is passionate about this organization and feels deeply connected to it because she has shared similar circumstances as the homeless children of the foundation. She said, "If every homeless child could gain second year assisting the box-a-thon, Schwachenwald is eager to pass on this new project to someone who will continue it as a tradition at Meredith. Last year, the fundraiser accommodated seven Meredith students who toughed out the night to raise money. This year, with a total of 23 students, including 12 who stayed through the rainy night, the tradition is catching on. If anyone is interested in heading up the project next year, contact Lynne Wheatley, Director of Volunteer Services in Jones Chapel. Scottie's Place is a camp for homeless children locat ed in West Vii^inia. In the unique adventure camp, children leam how to cope and deal with being home less. The motto of the camp is "Seeking to empower, edu cate and enliven homeless children through wilderness adventure." For more information about thecamp, visit www.scottiesplace.org. The project raised $1750 to give to the charity. The goal was $2000 so Meredith could sponsor five children. If you would still like to donate, there is still time to do so.
