CAMPUS SPORTS September 8,2005 5 Meredith Wins Shenandoah Soccer Tournament Ready to Run LAUREN STANFIELD Contributing Writer The Meredith soccec team played in their first tourna ment over this Labor Day weekend, and they took first place. Shenandoah Univer sity of Winchester, Virginia hosted the tournament. The soccer team left Friday after noon and arrived at their ho tel at 11 p.m. After six hours on the road, the Angels were excited to finally get off the bus, settle in, and get a good night sleep before their first game on Saturday. At 3 a.m. Saturday, a fire alarm woke the soccer team at the hotel that they were staying in, which also housed the Angels first opponent, Regis College of Boston, Massachusetts. Though it was just a false alarm, the alarm seemed to take a toll OQ Regis College more so than on Meredith, and it showed on the field. The Angels took on the Re gis Pride at noon on Satur day. Both teams came out a little slow, nervous for their first official tournament this season, but soon the Angels took control and got the first goal. The team continued to score and added on 3 more goals, sealing their victory 4-0. Goals were scored by Nicole Boucher, Lauren Stanfield, Delilah Torres, and Karen Taylor. After their first win of the season, the Angels were able to reflect and mentally pre pare for the winner of the game directly after them, which was between Shenan doah and Trinity College of Washington D.C. The athletes took time after the game to go back to the hotel, rest up for Sunday, and get over their initial nerves. Meredith Cowart stated, “As a fi-eshman, I was really nervous about it being our first tournament, because I really wanted to win. But Photo Oy: Laura Marshall Meredith soccer players; #12 Jackie Mafoomian, #19 Mary greace Moon Jr, #10 Jerica Moses after winning the first game, 1 was more confident that we would win the whole tourna ment. It also felt really good to finally win our first game of the season.” Saturday night, the Angels found out that they would be playing the tournament host, Shenandoah, in the champi onship game. The Hornets brutally outscored Trinity College 10-0. Sunday came fast, and soon it was game time. The Angels faced the Hornets at 2 p.m. Both teams started the first-half full force, bat tling for each 50/50 ball, and they continued to battle as the sun came out and the temperature rose. The game took a sudden turn when Nicole Bouch er dribbled the ball to the comer and crossed it into Shenandoah’s surprised de fensive line. Luckily for Meredith, Sophomore Jerica Moses was there to receive Nicole’s ball and put it past Shenandoah’s keeper, into the goal, putting the Angels ahead 1-0. Adding to Jerica’s goal was Margot Childs’, who took a direct kick for Meredith near the 40-yard line. Margot’s kick was placed just right as it sailed over the keeper’s hands and into the net. Mer edith went into half-time on top 2-1. The second half was ulti mately an endurance battle. Meredith’s main goal was to keep Shenandoah from scoring and of course, if pos sible, score another goal to keep the lead. Though the Angels did not score another goal, they were able to keep Shenandoah fi’om scoring. With support fi’om their fans and coaches, the Angels were able to win their game and ultimately win the tour nament. Meredith’s record now stands at 2-1. The Angels play their next game at Averett University on Wednesday, September 7 at 4:00 p.m. SUZIE POTTER Staff Writer Meredith College is con stantly changing to open up new opportunities to its stu dents, One of the latest de velopments on campus is the newly formed cross country team. Formerly, cross coun try was offered as an extra curricular club, but this year is the first for it to be a var sity sport. The team is coached by Amy Olsen, a newcomer to Meredith College. She is married to Hans Olsen, who coaches the women’s tennis team at NC State, and has two children, Anders, who is two, and Annika, who is four months old. She previ ously coached a cross coun try team at Duke, but came to Meredith this summer. In her short time here, she has already formed a positive opinion of Jhe College. When asked how she liked working at a women’s col lege, she responded, “I love it! It’s different, but a lot of fiin.” Cross country is a fall sport, but the members hope to continue running as a team in the spring. The team is open to runners of all skill levels, both beginner and experienced. Olsen says the girls help each other and are good at working as a team. The runners practice three times a week as a team but are encouraged to run every day. They plan on entering four meets in North Caro lina in the coming months and hope to go to the NCAA regionals in Arkansas in No vember. Teams do not have to qualify for regionals, but Olsen wants, to make sure her team is prepared to do well there. Olsen says running is a great way to relieve stress and get into shape, no mat ter what your current fitness level. The team is still open to new members, and any one interested is encouraged to contact Ms. Olsen.
