Friends of the Library Event By Barbara McCreary On Friday, October 11, the Friends of the Bogue Banks Public Library will host a morning with Barbara Claypole White, an award-winning author of five books. Her book The In-Between Hour won a Golden Quill for Best First Book and The Promise Between Us was a 2018 Silver Nautilus Award Winner. Fellow author Jody Picoult calls Ms. Whites book The Promise Between Us “[a]n eye-opening and realistic exploration of mental illness—a topic that greatly deserves to be front and center.” Ms. Whites life has taken interesting turns since her beginning in an English village. She became a history major who has worked in the fashion industry as well as the wife of a UNC-Chapel Hill professor; the mother of a son with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD); and, as stated on her web site biography, “[s]he has become an OCD advocate for the A2A Alliance, a nonprofit group that promotes advocacy over adversity.” In addition to her writing, she enjoys “gardening in the forests of North Carolina.” The Friends of the Bogue Banks Public Library would like to thank the Friends of the West Carteret Public Library, especially president Gina Funk and publicity chair Helen Aitken, for their help in making this event possible. We hope that this is the beginning of other opportunities to coordinate fundraising and programming events between the two Friends groups. The event will take place in the Bogue Banks Public Library art gallery at 10 a.m. and is free and open to the public. Please join us for coffee and pastries and a panel discussion of Ms. Whites works, which will be available for pur chase. In addition, door prizes will be awarded. ■tt- Author Barbara Claypole White Pine Knoll Shores Annual Turkey Trot By Cheryl Smith Get a jump start on burning off all those excess Thanksgiving Day calories with this scenic run, jog or walk that takes place along some of the prettiest regions of Pine Knoll Shores. The annual Pine Knoll Shores Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot is a fun and free celebration that is open to vacationers and locals alike. The trot begins at 9 a.m. at McNeill Park, but participants are asked to arrive earlier to check in and get their race bib. There are two options: • A 5K (3.1 mile) walk, run or jog that winds through the Crystal Coast Country Club golf course and down a few streets in Pine Knoll Shores. • A two-mile dog walk that does not go through the country club but rather traverses the streets of Pine Knoll Shores. At the finish, coffee, donuts, hot chocolate and water will be available for participants. To streamline registration, this year we have online registration available. Visit runsignup.com and enter “PKS Turkey Trot” in the search bar to register for this free event. Same day registration will also be available beginning at 8:15 a.m. at McNeill Park. The Turkey Trot is sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Committee and will occur rain or shine.
