. f November 5 Is Election Day Below are brief biographies of the Pine Knoll Shores candidates. Polls will be open on November 5 from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at your municipal site. One Stop (early) voting will run from October 16 through November 1 at the Board of Elections (BOE) office at 1702 Live Oak Street in Beaufort, Fort Benjamin Parks and Recreation Center at 100 McQueen Avenue in Newport and the Western Park Com munity Center at 275 Old Highway 58 in Cedar Point. The hours will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays (Monday through Friday) and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on just one Saturday, October 26. While the deadline for normal voter registration is October 11, in-person registra tion will be allowed during One Stop voting. Please be aware that voter registration during One Stop voting is available only to thosi who are voting that day. Voters who are registering must have lived in Carteret County for at least 30 days and must also provide proof of residency with one of the following documents that shows a current Carteret County address: a valid NC driver license, utility biU, bank statement, paycheck, govern ment check or other government document. Those who do not have a valid proof of resi dency may cast a provisional ballot at One Stop voting and then bring proof of residency to the BQE prior to November 5 at 5 p.m., and the BOE will make a determination as to whether that vote can be counted. Absentee ballots are allowed, but requests for the form must be received in the Board of Elections office at the above address (ZIP code: 28516) by 5 p.m. on October 29. In ad dition, absentee ballots may be requested by email at boemail@carteretcounty.gov or by fax at 252-728-8571. Absentee ballot request forms are also available on the BOE website at carteretcountync.gov/434/board-of-elections. Completed ballots must be postmarked by November 5 (or dropped off at the BOE office by 5 p.m. on that day). Important note: In addition to the November 5 postmark, mailed ballots must be received in the BOE of fice by 5 p.m. on November 8 to be counted. Photo IDs are not required for this election. Voting is a privilege and also an obligation of informed citizens. Meet the Pine Knoll Shores candidates. On Tuesday, October 8, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., citizens will have the opportunity to meet their local candidates running for office in Pine Knoll Shores. This Candidate Forum, held at the Pine KnoU Shores town hall, is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Carteret County and is free and open to the public. Robert Cox, Candidate for Mayor i Address: 260 Oakleaf Drive, Pine Knoll Shores, NC 28512 ; Birth: May 9, 1953, Rahway, NJ , Family: My grandparents moved to West Asheville in 1924, and my parents ran a small business in Skyland, NC. Amry and I just celebrated our 35th anniversary. We have deployed and lived all over 1 the world and are very proud of our combined Navy service of 54 years. Education: I graduated from T. C. Roberson High School in Arden, NC. I earned a B.S. in Business Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill (1975); masters in Financial . Management, U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA (1985); and masters in Strategy and Policy, National Defense University, Washington, DC (1999). Career history/Occupation: I entered the Navy in 1975 and was fortunate to have five at-sea commands, with my final operational tour as Commander, Ronald Reagan Strike Group in San Diego, CA. On retirement in 2007,1 started a veteran-owned small business in shipbuilding, successfully delivering a special purpose 250-ton, 145-foot, high-speed naval craft to the US Navy in 2012. Political experience: I was elected to our condominium board and elected as its president three years in a row in Arlington, VA. I served as the vice president for the first overseas chapter of a professional organization in Naples, Italy, and I have extensive experience working with our international allies in the US and abroad. Civic activities: I have been a member and volunteer of civic leagues and organizations for over 30 years in multiple locations. I have been a member of the Pine Knoll Shores Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and am on the Strategic Planning Committee. I have been the chairman of the PKA Auditing and Long Range Planning committees. Why are you the best candidate? Beginning with church, through Boy Scouts, the Navy and civic and other service organizations, I have been an active participant and leader at every level. Lbring a very strong analytical approach to all issues to achieve the best solution. To be an effective leader, you also need to know how to follow. You need to know when you have a good solution and when someone else has a better one. You have to be willing to implement that better solution and monitor its progress to know whgn to adjust. I prefer to tap a broad range of experts to collaborate and understand the issue and create a better solution. Top priority, if elected: My priority is to keep Pine Knoll Shores the unique place that all of us have come to know and enjoy. I want to help.manage our future growth and development to achieve that goal. As a part of this, I want to focus on preserving the natural resources and pristine waters of our community. It is time to begin investing in our aging infrastructure. I would like to make our governing processes more interactive with our residents and open to new ideas. Career history/Occupation: 12-year USAF veteran, 23-year small business owner, financial planner, investor, farmer Political experience: Five two-year terms as the mayor of Pine Knoll Shores, three years as president of the Crystal Coast Mayors Association, seven years on the Carteret County Beach Commission, four years as Pine Knoll Shores Planning Board member and chair for two years. Served to conclusion on the Governors Land Compatibility Task Force to prepare for a BRAC Commission, three years as NC Senate appointee to the Eastern Region Economic Development Commission, three years as Carteret County representative to the Coastal Regional Airport Authority (EWN) Civic activities: I have devoted my time to representing our town to the county and state in fairness and tax issues. I have supported our county and other towns through volunteer activities, including the Morehead City Downtown Alive at Five, the Summer Reading Program at the Beaufort Public Library, numerous parades every year (4-6) and am very active at St. Egbert Church in Morehead City. Why are you the best candidate? I have 10 years of experience as your mayor. I have been in leadership positions a majority of my life, including 12 years in the US Air Force. I think the people of Pine Knoll Shores deserve the best, and we have brought that to your government services. We have assembled a very talented team in every area of our town, and I want to continue to be a member of that team and provide you with the best. There is never a time to sit back and take your eye off the ball. We are faced with new challenges all the time (beach nourishment and occupancy tax, sea turtle critical habitat, recycling methods, water systems and maintenance, hiring and keeping the best personnel, state and federal government changes, beach parking, development, natural disasters, 2019: The Year of the Tree, etc.). I will maintain the character of our beautiful, yet fragile, town and keep looking ahead to protect our future. Top priority, if elected: Communication always remains my top priority.
