(Continued from page 20) A Special Little Butterfly ing Sparkleberry plants. However, on May 15 flowering of the Sparkleberry was' almost over. But maybe there is no need to focus on nectaring Sparkleberry or other flow ering species. On May 27, 2021, Suzanne and I counted 54 Oak Hairstreaks at the Trinity Center, and these were all (or almost all) associated with low-stature Live Oaks between Salter Path Road and the ocean. (I don’t know if they prefer the smaller Live Oaks, or if it was simply the case that they were easier to see than would be the case in the tops of taller Live Oaks.) The butterflies were seen resting on, or fluttering around close to, the oak leaves. This is one of the highest counts'of this species ever recorded in North Carolina. I am interested in hearing about any observations of Oak Hairstreaks in Pine , Knoll Shores. Based on information gained so far, it seems that the best time to look for them is from about May 10 through the rest of the month, although per haps some could be found in June. My email address is jofuss@ec.rr.com. John Fussell is a biologist, with primary interests in birds and plants. For the last few years, he has been redoing biological surveys of the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area that he did back in 1974 as an intern for Division of State Parks. Components of this work have included habitat mapping (at a much finer scale than in 1974, because of the availability of GPS), listing of all vascular plants found in the park and bird censuses/surveys. During the recent survey work, he has also searched for rare invertebrate species (such as butterflies and moths). Although Fussell confesses that he has difficulty identifying a lot of these species, and indeed, it is easy to com pletely overlook them. However, learning about them, and what ways they interact with the environment, can be very rewarding. Species such as the Oak Hairstreak are actually very attractive if you are fortunate to get a good look at them. For would-be butterfly enthusiasts, Fussell recommends the purchase of some good quality binoculars that can focus on objects as close as five feet away. PIKSCO Happenings (Continued from page 14) bishing the shower area at Hammer Park, along with new motion lighting along the walkways. We also plan to clean and organize the contents of the Garner Park shed. Lastly, we hope to complete the new swing set project in Garner Park by finalizing the fall-zone parameters and installing the appropriate depth of cypress mulch. Our PIKSCO annual meeting is tentatively set for Saturday, July 16, and will be held in McNeill Park. More information and details will follow. PIKSCO contact.
