corners which had caused some property owners to put obstructions in the right-of-way which are dangerous. These will have to be removed but he requested the Planning Board to consider an ordinance. He is also studying the use of the Town Hall to see if im provements are indicated. Commissioner Shedd gave the Building Inspector's report. There was one residential permit and one commercial issued along with 7 miscellaneous permits. He also informed the ccarmissioners that work has been resumed on the unfinished house on Loblolly about which there has been considerable concern. Two certificates of occupancy were issued. He also reported on the Planning Board. This is covered below. Commissioner Sotir, reportiaig last month that there were five people in training for EMT's on the Rescue Squad, had to revise that figure to two because three had dropped out for one reason or another. The need for EMT's thus becomes acute. He then made another appeal for volunteers. For this service there is no greater contribution one can make. We quote Ken Haller in "Town of Pine Knoll Shores, 1973-1985": "During the approximately 8 years since it began, the Rescue Squad has not only completely justified its existence; it has proved again and again that it is absolutely essential to life in Pine Knoll Shores. It is difficult to imagine how the people living here could cope with illness and accidents without this team of quick response, trained to care, not only for the immediate problem, but also for transportation to where professional medical attention can be obtained. The Rescue Squad renders its superb service day and night, seven days a week...." Commissioner White, in making the police report, told of 104 calls, 165 house checks 3 breaking and entering investigations [Trinity Center] and 13 breatholizer tests. There was one fire. It was in the laundry at the Holiday Inn and was out before the squad got there. Mayor Hanan had some announcements. The DOT will be visiting this county from May 11-13 to evaluate the state road needs here. All the towns will get together to host a dinner for its members and the commissioners voted $450. for our share. This will be a good opportunity to bring to their attention some of our concerns about Route 58—its drainage, white lines, etc. The Aquarium has given notice to the Bogue Banks Library that its space is needed and has asked that it make plans to relocate by next year. Since the library is so important to the residents of Pine Knoll Shores the mayor has appointed Emily White to head a committee to study the feasibility of relocating it in Pine Knoll Shores. There may not be room for all o«i this committee but if you are interested in serving leave your name in the office at the Town Hall/ or come to the organizational meeting Marc 1st at Town Hall.«':'^-' f- ■' , , , , j.-,. j j The Department of Agriculture has studied the area where the tussock moth abounded and has found no evidence of it this year. They will study the gypsy moth target area next. With a $300 contribution from the Womens Club for Red Tide relief, the Pine Knoll Shores total contribution is now at $2300. With the Proclamation to designate the month of March as Carteret Public Giving Month, as requested by the Carteret Public Giving Foundation, the meeting was adjourned. PLANNING BOARD At the January meeting the Board was asked to consider the concept proposed by Ken Kirkman, new owner of the shopping center property, which would allow for 19 single family lots on Pine Knoll Boulevard and behind the 3 commercial only sections on Salter Path. The Board voted 3 to 2 to approve the concept.
