Page 7 The Shoreline March, 2001 The Friends of the Boaue Banks Library mW hold their next semi-annual Book Sale on Saturday, April 7, 2001 from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. at the Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, 201 East Fort Macon Road, Atlantic Beach (Just east of the main intersection). The sale is open to the public and offers an excellent opportunity to buy recent best seller and other desirable books covering all subjects at amazing bargain prices. The book sale committee chairpersons are Jane Hobson, Marge Michael and Paulette Murphy. The Friends solicit book donations for the sale all year round. Donations may be left at the Bogue Banks library and are greatly appreciated. All full and part-time residents as well as visitors who value their use of the library are urged to join the Friends. Membership dues are used along with book sale proceeds and donations to fund a variety of worthwhile projects. One special benefit of being a member is access to the "Members Only" book sale held at 7:00 P.M. on the Friday evening preceding the semi-annual book sale. A family membership is only $15 per year, I and an individual membership in only $10 per year, less than the cost of one new book. The Friends' 2000 budget contains funding for foul weather book bags, new audio books, childrens' summer reading programs, a magnifying reading lamp, special pre-school storytime, newsletters for members, a new outdoor book return, auditorium risers and videotape collections. Continuing public support will enable the Friends to realize these ambitious goals. Volunteers can help with the sale by setting up the sales space, moving books, and arranging books on the sales tables. For further information or to volunteer to help with the sale please call or visit the library or call one of the chairpersons (Jane at 240-3058, Marge at 247-6695, Paulette at 247-4684) or Bill Johnston, President, at 240-1531. Members are reminded that we will hold our annual membership meeting at the church at 6:30 P.M. immediately prior to the "Members Only" sale on Friday. Participation is free with paid admission to the Aquarium ($3 adults, $2 seniors and active military), and registration begins March 1. The Aquarium and the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service have put their heads together to coordinate this half-day workshop from 9 a.m. to noon, and the varied topics cover an interesting range of subjects; "Water Gardening," by Eric Cantu of Carolina Pondscapes; "Designing Landscapes With Nature in Mind," by Madeline Sutter; "Quick and Easy Plant Propagation" by Jane Weinreich, and "Ants, Ants, Everywhere," by Stephen Wesley, who will discuss fire ants and other species. Cooperative Extension Agent Lisa Wimpfheimer will also be on hand to answer gardening questions. Sign up early to ensure a spot. If you're interested in birds, think about signing on for the beginning-birder trip, "Fair Weather Birding on March 6. As the group moves from site to site, songbirds will be identified, however, the trip's primary focus will be on migratory waterfowl, which will be heading north soon. Birders will check nearby ponds and creeks to see how many mergansers, buffleheads, green-winged teals, scoters and other species are still around. Cost is $6 per person and advance registration is required. If you visit the Aquarium during the next few months, plan on meeting lots of excited youngsters. In March, April and May, registered school groups tour the Aquarium in large numbers, mainly in the morning, and their enthusiasm can turn the serenity of the Aquarium into a cacophony of shrieks and squeals. For a calmer experience, visit after 1:30 p.m., and, even then, a school group may arrive unannounced. Remember, if you have a college-age child or grandchild, the Aquarium is accepting applications for two summer internships. Internships begin June 1 and end mid-August. Interns work in the husbandry and education departments, and must submit a standard state application to the Director of the N.C. Aquarium, P.O. Box 580, Atlantic Beach, NC, 28512. Deadline for applications is April 1. Applications are available from any state agency, including the Aquarium, or at Web site www.osp.state.nc.us/OSP/applctn.htm. On the application, applicants should indicate their preference for husbandry or education departments. For more information, call the Aquarium at 247-4003.
