Garden Club Members Mark Lenora Roberson's Birthday By Jan Corsello Christmas Eve Flotilla Participants are being recruited for a boat parade again this year on the PKS canal on Christmas Eve. Boats will line up and proceed from Brock Basin through the canal under the Mimosa Drive bridge, past Hall Haven, down the slew, under the Oakleaf bridge and end at the inlet. Any holiday decorations or music, simple or elaborate, will be fine to decorate boats. Bring family and friends to ride on boats or watch along the way. There is no registration necessary for this informal event. Any boaters interested in participating may meet at Brock Basin at dusk (approximately 5:20 p.m.). In case of rain or inclement weather, the event may be cancelled. Anyone needing more information may call Allison McDuffy at 726-3542. Get the Right Number PKS residents trying to contact police after normal office hours to report a situation that is not an emergency but may be causing some concern should dial 504-4800. Police Chief Joey Culpepper notes that sometimes residents calling after hours dial the regular police or town hall number and get a recording giving them a list of numbers to use to reach police personnel. At times, he says, the caller fails to listen to the entire recorded message on the police line, misses the instruction that the 504-4800 number should be used for non emergency after hours calls, and elects to call another number that may lead to a voice mail box that will not be accessed until the next business day. Culpepper suggests that residents post the 504-4800 after hours number next to their phone together with the regular police number so that both are always handy. The 504-4800 number is included in the list of numbers for town officials and services published each month in The Shoreline. Cutting out the panel and posting it prominently near the phone would be a good thing to do. On Thursday Nov. 9, ten members of the Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club traveled to Snug Harbor to help celebrate member Lenora Roberson's Nov. 12 birthday. Joining them was Julia Woolard, a former Garden Club Member, who is also a Snug Harbor resident. Lenora graciously received the group in a lovely parlor near her room. Lenora's room has a beautiful view of the water. Local golfers vied for prizes as Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity held its Ninth Annual Golf Tournament Nov. 3 at The Country Club of the Crystal Coast. During the day's play, "Soup Ladies" Barbara Baccollo, Judy Garry, Barbara Gaunt, Mary Anne Hotham, Dorothy Manion and Carol Yentsch from Pine Knoll Shores supplied warm soup and warm smiles to the participants. Some of the Habitat volunteers from Pine Knoll Shores who helped to keep the action moving included Norm Beatty, Bill Hotham, Bill Keefe, Bob Marshall and Bob Murphy. The day culminated in a BBQ chicken dinner, at which prizes were awarded. and Julia's room is nearby. Julia, who is an artist, has brought many of her beautiful watercolors to Snug Harbor. The two women are pleased to be able to enjoy each other's company while at Snug Harbor. Lois Jean O'Keefe orgaruzed the festive event and provided the delicious birthday cakes. She is a long time friend of both women, as are many others in the Garden Club. Profits from the tournaments are used to build new Habitat homes. The fifth designated golf tournament house is under construction, with Habitat in this area working now on house number 69. Many local businesses provided hole sponsorships. The Country Club of the Crystal Coast was the Charity Host Sponsor, while corporate sponsorship was provided by First Flight, partnering with the Carteret County Association of Realtors. For information on how you can join in Habitat projects, call 808-2757 or visit the office at 1412 Bridges Street in Morehead City. PKS Garden Club Holiday News By Chris Walters Garden club members have been busy creating original Pine Knoll Shores Christmas tree ornaments. They are on sale at the library and town hall at very reasonable prices and would make great gifts for friends and family. Luminaria kits at a cost of $5.00 for 8 bags and candles will be available at town hall from December 2 until Dec 22. This year the luminaria display will not cover as large an area. On Christmas Eve candles will illuminate Mimosa Blvd. from Salter Path Rd. up to and including Brock Basin and Beechwood Dr. up to and including Hall Haven. As in the past, the garden club invites small donations (as memorials if you wish) so that this Christmas Eve tradition can continue. These can be given to any garden club member or mailed to our treasurer, Sheryl Woodbury at P.O. Box 3125, Atlantic Beach N.C. 28512-3125. All profits are used to cover expenses incurred in the maintenance of public gardens in Pine Knoll Shores.
