Page 4 The Shoreline December 2006 Sand Slated Continued from Page 1 This round of 933 project work will be done under a $10.3 million contract by- Weeks Marine, which submitted the low bid. Federal funds will account for 65% of the cost. The state will provide a little over 25% of the funds, with the remainder, a little under 9%, coming from the Town of Pine Knoll Shores. The town's share has already been accounted for. The 933 designation for the beach nourishment work comes from the number of that section of federal law under which the project is authorized. Ordinarily, the law requires the Corps of Engineers to dispose of dredging spoils in the most cost effective manner. That means sand dredged up out of charmels and harbors is typically dumped at sea at an ocean disposal site. The 933 section of the law provides an option under which the most cost effective disposal method requirement can be waived if a better use for the dredged material is demonstrated and if the incremental cost can be paid by others. Complications and red tape surrounding the effort to qualify the PKS beach nourishment program for 933 status, and thereby eligible for federal funds, was only one of the hurdles confronted over the past several years. Such things as lack of suitable sand, public beach access requirements, weather, the need to protect endangered species of turtles during warm weather months all contributed to delaying the project. Town officials point out that it took the persistence, perseverance and hard work of many people and officials, past and present, at all levels of government to bring the project to fruition. Morgan and Grace Hammer and Howard and Grace Hunter lived on the same street in Pennsylvania from the early 1950's until both couples retired and moved to Pine Knoll Shores. Morgan and Grace, on vacation in 1975, traveled through this area and came back the following year to purchase a lot being sold by a realty company operating out of an office that later became Bogue Banks Country Club. Grace and Howard Hunter did the same thing the next year and continued their friendship through the many years they lived in our community and their friendship remains to this day. Friends following friends to this area is quite a familiar occurrence here in Pine Knoll Shores. Eventually, the Hammer's returned to Pennsylvania to be near their son and the Hunter's have moved into Harbor View Towers in Morehead City. Morgan Hammer recently passed away and it is fitting that we remember that it is through his insight, generosity and hard work that we have the "sittum" at the PIKSCO ocean park. He took it upon himself to provide the lumber, his labor and that of his friends to build the ocean deck we now all enjoy. In tribute PIKSCO Association members named this park the Morgan P. Hammer Park. The Shoreline extends heartfelt condolences to his family and grateful thanks for his contribution to our community. Ralwiggies By Jane Ashland Ralwiggies, A Feel Good Lunch, is located at 3710 Arendell St. in Morehead City. It is not only a "feel good" lunch but also a real "taste good" lunch. They are open from 10:15 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed on the weekends and holidays. With the busy holidays approaching take time out from shopping and relax there at lunch time. You won't be disappointed. Their daily menu includes four different kinds of soup, a large salad bar, homemade breads and a dozen different kinds of fruit smoothies. There is also pizza and baked potatoes for the hearty appetite. On my first visit we enjoyed the tomato basil soup along with a bowl of corn crab bisque. Other soups that day were Italian Wedding soup and black bean. To quote television chef Rachel Ray, "Yum Oh". In addition there is a large and varied salad bar with greens, veggies, fruit, cheeses, pasta salads and of course some great dressings. The fruit smoothies are healthy, tasty and refreshing with the pineapple mint and the strawberry banana big hits with us. The prices vary; the most expensive item on the menu is what they call "The Grand Voyage", all the soup, salad, potatoes and bread you can eat for $8.00. I enjoyed the "Short Journey" which is two small bowls of soup and one trip to the salad bar for $7.00. There are a few other options and soups and salads can be ordered to take out. Try it; I think you'll like it and go back as I plan to do. “BURDEN FREE LIVING” No need to move out of your home!
