Page 10 The Shoreline March 2008 Reading Program Events Peak in March, April The 2008 Region Read program sponsored by the C.P.C. Regional Library System will reach its climax with a flood of events in March and April. The program seeks to have everyone in the area read one book and then discuss it at meetings of book clubs and other groups. The Region Read is a continuation of One Read programs held in past years that focused on the classics; "Captains Courageous" and "The Great Gatsby.' This year the book being featured is "The Rocket Boys" by Homer Hickam, Jr., a retired N ASA engineer. Hickam's memoir is set in the 1950's and captures the gee- whiz of rocketry, the space program and things that wink in the night sky. Region Read officially began on January 28, when representatives from Carteret County Public Library placed a wreath at astronaut Mike Smith's memorial on the Beaufort waterfront. Mike was the pilot in the space shuttle Challenger. He grew up in Carteret County, and the libraries hope to remind everyone of the bravery of this hometown hero. A photo display of Mike is currently on view at the Carteret County Public Library. Reading "Rocket Boys" is sure to spark interest in the 50"' anniversary of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Plans are being finalized to have a NASA astronaut speak at the Crystal Coast Civic Center for the general public. This will be especially appropriate for sixth grade classes. From mid-February through mid-April, exhibits on the moon, aeronautics and products incorporating NASA technology will be at the Carteret County Public Library, Western Carteret Public Library, Havelock-Craven County Public Library and New Bern-Craven County Public Library. The Imagination Station will present "Soar with Physics" at the Carteret County Public Library, Western Carteret Public Library and New Bern Public Library. This program culminates with a live rocket launch sure to ignite the interest of visitors young and old. The movie "October Sky" will be shown at various times at all the public libraries in the Craven-Pamlico-Carteret region. The award-winning movie was adapted from "Rocket Boys. ” As with One Read efforts in the past, area book clubs can pick up special book club kits and share the excitement of rocketry by reading and discussing "Rocket Boys."
