March 2008 The Shoreline Page 11 4 Dys 3 Nghts in Sound too good to be true? Nowadays that certainly would be the case. But in 1945 that's what the Hotel New Yorker charged members of the senior class of Townsend (Massachusetts) High School for their graduation trip to the big city. That was not just for lodging. Also included, as the itinerary reproduced here dramatically shows, was roundtrip rail transportation between Boston and New York City, most meals, tips, taxes and tickets to a variety of shows and tours. Not included were subway and bus fares, including the roundtrip cost of 30 cents to ride a Fifth Avenue double-decker bus to LaGuardia Airport where the students ate lunch in the swank Kitty Hawk Room and watched "The Floor Show of the Air" from the observation deck overlooking the LaGuardia runways. Anne Reeves of Oakleaf Drive and one of the Townsend High students, recently uncovered her copy of the 1945 itinerary (which she considers a gem of memorabilia) from one of her "messy desk drawers." Anne acknowledged that she had the 30 cents for the double-decker bus fare in her purse, but not much more. She also noted that Townsend was a pretty small town, with just 17 boys and girls in the graduating class. Not all of them made the trip to New York because several of the boys left school early to enlist in the armed forces as World War II continued to rage. "They were still awarded their diplomas," Anne adds with an emphatic hint of pride. Townsend High School New York Trip 1945 First Day 1. Leave Boston - New Haven Railroad 12 Noon 2.
