March 2008 The Shoreline Page 7 m Aquarium Set to Launch Fishing Instruction Program Cast aside work and spring-cleaning and reel in soniie real fun with the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. The aquarium is offering new fishing programs that include expert instruction, hands-on learning and family fun time. Beginning in March, the aquarium will offer weekly "Fishing Fanatics" classes every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants learn the basics of fishing and then get hands-on instruction at the beach. The aquarium provides equipment and bait, and covers the licensing requirements. The program is $15 per person and requires advance registration. On March 15 the Aquarium will present the "Get Hooked" Fishing School - a daylong seminar featuring presentations from local fishing experts. The day also offers chances to win fishing gear, booths operated by fishing organizations and vendors, and a catered lunch. Visit food preparation Spring Breakers to Help Build Habitat Homes Students from across the country will travel to Atlantic Beach for their spring break as part of Habitat for Humanity's "Collegiate Challenge." InMarchstudents from the College of William and Mary, SUNY-Syracuse, and Siena College will help with framing three Habitat houses. One is located in Newport for a family of seven and the other two are in Havelock. "This will be our 12* year playing host to college students" stated Kris Durham, executive director of Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity. "While many of their peers are relaxing on a beach somewhere these students are putting in hundreds of hours of hard work for Habitat's Collegiate Challenge. By the end of the week, not only will the students have learned how to build a house, they will also have seenhow their actions can help improve people's lives by providing safe, decent affordable shelter through a Habitat home." This spring break, 12,000 students have signed up to participate in Habitat's Collegiate Challenge across the country. The program offers high school and college students year-round opportunities to use their vacations to serve a community by volunteering to build homes. Students from the United States and Canada will travel to 210 locations in the United States. Throughout its 19-year history. Collegiate Challenge has sent more than 155,000 students to build Habitat houses. During this time students have raised more than $14.6 million through the program. This year. Collegiate Challenge students will contribute $1.5 million to help build houses. Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity has been building homes in Carteret County and Havelock for almost 20 years. In December it completed its 70* home project, just in time for the family to move in for the holidays.
