Page 8 The Shoreline March 2008 Around T own By Bob Ruggiero If it's a bit too chilly to take a dip in the ocean off PKS, try the beaches in Costa Rica. PKSers Dick and Joy Wray, Jeannie Best and Maureen and Bob Danehy (left to right in the photo) did just that on a 10-day junket to the Central America country last month. The temperature on this visit to a gulf coast beach was a balmy 85 degrees, and the water 80 degrees. They also dipped their tootsies in the nearly as warm Pacific on the other side of the nation. Pleasantly !4-:i • f i * * * * * Marilyn and Ted Lindblad recently motored to Florida to see friends and relatives and take advantage of a golf outing at the Litchfield Golf Club Myrtle Beach on their return trip. On the first day, Ted was able to make Ocala, Florida after a full day of driving. On the second day, they headed to Ft. Myers for a four day visit with Marilyn's cousin and family. After a pleasant stay, they traveled north to Sarasota to meet with Jan and Pat Webb, former residents of Pine Knoll Shores. On leaving Sarasota they again traveled north to join their golf outing friends in Myrtle Beach, then home to Pine Knoll Shores after a ten-day trip. » 5{- 5{- }(■ Sf warm temperatures weren't always the rule. The thermometer stood at 45 degrees when they stood amidst the clouds 8,000 feet up and stared down into the cloud- filled crater of a volcano. By the time it was time to go they had also walked in a rain forest, toured a coffee plantation and put on a few pounds dining in a country where they found the food good and the people friendly. Terrie Sweeny and Diane Donovan have just returned from a two-week Elderhostel tour of Patagonia and the Andean Lake Region of Chile and Argentina. They visited a Santiago winery, Valdivia where they saw the results of the 1960 earthquake, and then an equestrian farm in Puerto Varas. The following day they were on an all day trip riding on three boats and four buses to cross the Andes and enter Argentina at Bariloche where they visited an estancia (sheep ranch). Then onto Trelew for a High Welsh Tea and the sighting of the largest rookery for penguins in continental South America in the Punto Tombo Reserve. They finished their fabulous trip in Buenos Aires with a Tango lesson and a visit to Eva Peron's tomb. John and Anita Adler recently returned from a holiday trip to Birmingham, Alabama where their son Brian is a hemotology/oncololgy specialist. After an enjoyable visit with Brian, daughter-in-law Karen and two grandsons they traveled to Asheville, North Carolina for a prearranged meeting with Frank and Rosemary Zey, who were returning from a visit with son Todd who is a disc jockey in the Nashville, Tennessee area. They met at a local Holiday Inn and spent the day and an enjoyable dinner together before heading home to Pine Knoll Shores. Two PKS Residents Among New Power Squadron Officers Submitted by JB Bagby Two PKS residents were among the new officers installed by the Fort Macon Sail & Power Squadron at the group's eighth annual Change of Watch ceremonies recently at the Country Club of the Crystal Coast. The two officers from PKS are Lt. Cmdr. JB Bagby, who will serve as administrative officer, and Lt. Cmdr. John Clarke, treasurer. The new squadron commander is Tom Myers of Beaufort, who succeeds Cmdr. Robert Howd of Newport. Rounding out the "bridge" staff are Lt. Cmdr. Bruce Brill of Morehead City, executive officer, Lt. Cmdr. Louise Manke of Newport, secretary, and Dick McKeon of Havelock, education officer. Organized in 2000, the Fort Macon Squadron is a unit of the United States Power Squadrons. It now has more than 100 members dravm from throughout Carteret County. The installation of officers was conducted by District Commander Mack Gowdy. 1
