January 2009 The Shoreline Page 9 Parade Ushers in Holidays Nothing brings smiles to so many adults and children like a parade, and the Pine Knoll Shores Annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 6, was no exception. Residents and visitors lined Oakleaf Drive and marveled at the many cheerful marchers and riders all decked out in colorful attire and traveling in festively decorated floats and vehicles. Leading the parade, a color guard detail from Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune was greeted with cheers and applause as they marched by. Adding to the jubilant festivities were numerous dignitaries, including Grand Marshal Mayor Joan Lamson. Captivating everyone was the adorable dog float with precious pets showing off for the crowd. The aquarium's unique float was a major highlight and the West Carteret High School band and ROTC marchers added lots of pizzazz. Last but not least, the arrival of the one and only Santa topped off what was undeniably a magical occasion. All in all, it was a great day and just about as traditional as you can get for ushering in the holiday season and welcoming everyone to "Christmas on the Island." Thanks to Darlene Smith and Jacquie Pipkin for spearheading the event and to all the many parade participants for contributing to a great annual occasion.
