Pa^e Two FIELDCREST MiILL WHISTLE May 26, 1947 Karastan Man’s Picture Appeared Twice In “Life’ Because he was photogenic or for some reason or another, Rholie Bailey, war veteran now assistant foreman of the Karastan Setting Department, was probably the most publicized soldier serving in the China-Burma-India theatre during the war. The pictures above, which show Bailey with his valet, and with a cardboard girl, were published in Life Magazine under “Reports from India.” The valet picture appeared in November, 1942, and Bailey’s wife, the former Miss Lorene Matthews of the Woolen Mill office, received the original picture and a letter saying his picture would appear again in a later issue. Bailey’s mother-in- law, Mrs. Robert Matthews, was the first to recognize the picture, but when the second one came out many friends recognized the picture and told his wife about it before she had seen it. Bailey joined the army in 1940 and in March, 1942, he left for New Delhi, India. No word was received from him for three months. Later his wife received a letter from an English woman in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, telling how the latter’s husband had met Bailey while he was in port and how he had enjoyed hearing him sing. She said that Bailey was worried because he was not allowed to write home until his destination had been reached. It was not until the picture came out in Life that Bailey’s wife knew he was in India. Bailey is quite talented. He sings, draws, and cooks. His specialty in cooking is Italian spaghetti. Just recently it was discovered that he has a gift for sewing and it seems he acquired his ideas about color while in India. —G. H. Why all the enthusiasm stirred among the females? In the spring a young woman’s fancy turns to spring cleaning and with it comes new doilies for home decoration. Recently Fannie Steagall, of Rayon Weaving, displayed several of her latest accomplishments. Now the click of needles, colorful thread and plenty of discussions make one happy family un dertaking the art of embroidery. Gotta hand it to you, girls, that’s a wonderful idea with wonderful results. Why not organize a Fieldcrest sewing circle? —V. H. The best way to do any job is the safe way. “Bubbles” Becker Buys Half of Club Martinique!
