September 29, 1947 FIELDCREST MILL W-HISTLE Seven DOLLARS AND SENSE Directs ‘Land Of Eden’ ‘How Big Are Profits?” There are generally two ways of speaking of percentage of profits: (1) A percentage of sales and (2) a percent age of investment. For all U. S. corpor ations over a period of .the last 10 years the percentage of profit after taxes to total sales has averaged about four cent; the percentage profit after taxes to in vestment about seven and one-half per cent. An interesting point in connection with profits is that the opportunity to make a profit carries with it the risk of operating at a loss. Few people realize that of all the businesses in operation in this country during the period 1916- 1943, one-half of them failed. Still another point is that, when look ing at the history of profits and wages over the period of the last 40 years, high profits and high wages go together and low profits and low wages go together. However, few of us would want our wages to fluctuate as vjidely as profits do. We certainly would not want to have to fork over some of our savings to make good the company’s losses in bad years the way the stock holders have to do. For this reason it would be a poor idea to make wages de pendent on profits. Fortunately there is a much better way of connecting wages to corporation activity and that way is to base increas ed wages on increased productivity; not to concentrate on getting a bigger piece of pie that is already baked but instead to help make a bigger pie. Special 50-cent Lunch (Continued from Page One) represents “good food value and good money value” for the 50-cent price, which includes tax. No substituting of foods included in the special can be permitted although the full a la carte service of the cafe teria is available at regular prices, the manager said. Each customer will receive a ticket which will be placed in a box. One ticket will be drawn from the box each day and the winner will be entitled to a free meal. I All the daily tickets will be accumu lated and one will be drawn during Fieldcrest Community Week. The holder of this ticket will receive a Fieldcrest Thermostatic Blanket. The name of the winner will be announced on the Field crest radio program October 19. Scoutmasters’ Training Course Is Conducted At Camp Cherokee A Scoutmasters’ training course for Scoutmasters of the Cherokee Council, Boy Scouts of America, was held at Camp Cherokee Saturday and Sunday, September 20 and 21. Vernon (Draper Person nel) and James E. Bondurant (Cost De partment) of the troop training staff had prominent parts in the course. L. E. Richards (Training Department) district chairman for leadership training, had charge of the visual aid portion of the program. Edgar Garrett, of the University of North Carolina, wrote the script and is directing the pageant, “The Land of Eden,” to be presented at the Tri-City baseball park October 13-14 as a feature cf Fieldcrest Community Week. Mr. Garrett was stage manager for the “Lost Colony” pageant at Manteo in the sum mer of 1946. r > ABSENTEE METER Two-week periods ending August 31 and Septsmber 14 Per Cent MILL 8-31 9-14 Woolen . . . . .. 4.0 3.1 Hosiery . . . . . . 4.7 4.4 Finishing . . . . . 5.5 5.4 Towel . . 4.6 6.5 Central Warehouse . .. 6.1 6.7 Rayon . . 5.4 6.8 Bedspread . . . 8.1 6.9 Embr.
