Winners Of Sears Sales Contest Visit Mills
Domestics section managers from
Sears, Roebuck and Co. retail stores,
who were winners in a sales contest,
enjoyed a visit to Fieldcrest Mills on
Wednesday and Thursday, May 9 and
10. Accompanied by Sears officials, the
contest winners traveled in a Sears
private plane, which remained at the
Danville, Va., airport during their visit
to Fieldcrest.
With headquarters at the Fieldcrest
Lodge at Fieldale, the group made tours
of all of our domestics mills in the
Tri-Cities and Fieldale, with a side
trip to Philpott Dam.
Sears gave the expense-paid trip
as a reward for the section managers’
increasing sales to the highest percent
age above their quotas in the contest.
The pleasure trip was combined with
the mill visit to give the sales people
an opportunity to observe our produc
tion processes and quality testing pro
gram.
In the group were: Manley P. Mad

It was at 3:20 p.m. on June 22, 1906
—50 years ago last Friday—that the
steam was turned on in the engine room
and the Blanket Mill was started up
for the first time.
The picture at left shows W. A. John
son, who was engineer, as he turned
a wheel to start up the engine.
Mr. Johnson was engineer for a long
time before he retired from the mill
several years ago. He is 82 years old
but remains very active. He puts in
a full day every day, looking after his
farming interests and supervising
mechanical work at Johnson Chevrolet
Corp. He has a large famliy of chil
dren, most of whom have worked at
Fieldcrest. One son, George, is em
ployed in the Blanket Mill Shop. The
picture was loaned to us by another
son. Mack, who is in business at Dra
per.
