G. C. Swinnsy plays game against long-time friend, Tommie Wiswell, world’s champion checker player. Mr. Swinney played two tie games, has beaten the champion occasionally in the past. Playing Mr. Wiswell here is Isaac M. Craddock, of Central Warehouse. At Mr. Craddock’s right is Charlie Z. Roberts, Finishing Mill retiree, who played the champion to a draw game. An enthusiastic checker player is W. E. Richardson, retired watchman at the Bedspread and Karastan mills, shown here as the plays against the champion. At Mr. Richardson’s left is A. D- Rogers. Checker Champion Visits ‘Y’ Checker enthusiasts from the Fieldcrest organization had an opportuniiy to play against the world’s champion when Tommie Wiswell made one of his periodic visits to Consolidated Central Y.M.C.A. Saturday evening, January 6. Mr. Wiswell, of Brooklyn, N. Y., has been the world s champion free style player since he defeated Millard Hopper, of New York, in 1951. No local player won a game from the champion although three were able to play him to a draw. Those playing tie games with the champion were G. C. Swinney, two games; John Bay Webster, two games; and Charlie Z. Roberts, one game. In a feature of the exhibition in which six boys played against the champion, Mr. Wiswell declared David Crane the best player. The champion autographed one of his books and presented it to the young player. David is a sixth grade stu dent at Leaksville Graded School and is the son of Raleigh Crane, of the Spinning Department at the Sheeting Mill. The exhibition was sponsored by the Consolidated Central Y.M.C.A. Checker Club of which Ernest Rogers, of the Finish ing Mill, is president. G. C. Swinney, retired Blanket Mill fore man, is secretary of the club. On The Job At Fieldcrest Keith Bales is a mechanic in the Plant Service Department of the Auto matic Blanket Plant at Smithfield. As the head machinist, he must know hoW to operate the milling machine, lathes and the other equipment in the machine shop and must thoroughly understan the metal hardening process. He also must be familiar with all of the machinery in the plant in order him and his associates to make repairs. His experience, skill and de pendability make him a key man in tn operation of the mill. An early employee of the AutornaU Blanket Plant, he is quiet but friendly- one of the best-known men at the ^ ' He is married and lives across n® Interstate Highway 95 opposite th^ Automatic Blanket Plant and practic ally in sight of the mill building- THE MILL WHISTL®^ Young Generation This is Terry Doletha Solomon, 14 months old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Solomon. Terry is granddaughter of E. J. Lester, who is employed in the Bedspread Carding Dept.
