One of nine audiometric testing booths built by shop at NCF for use in hearing conservation program. At Karastan Worsted Plant, Dale House, certified technician, prepares to test hearing of Rebecca Davenport. 9 New Testing Booths Aid Hearing Conservation Program Fieldcrest’s continuing hearing con servation program has taken a big step lorward with the construction of nine sudiometric testing booths for u’se at Outlying mill locations. Built in the shop at the North Car olina Finishing Co. division at Salisbury, ®11 of the booths have been delivered *0 the mills where they will be used ®hd most of them have been put into Place. The Safety Department is in the pro- cess of certifying the booths, after which they -wijj be put into use in hearing tests conducted by the Company’s au- 'tiometric testing technicians. Built to approved design and specifi- oations, each booth has a 4’ x 4’ concrete ease on which is constructed sheetrock sidings with acoustical insulation. The Uiside is finished with sheetrock cov ered with Laurelcrest carpet. Ventila- ,toti and lighting are built in. Each booth equipped with a Tracer audiometer. The nine booths make a total of 17 Stores To Be Open The Fieldcrest Stores, both in Eden in Columbus, Ga., will be open on ^riday and Saturday, November 24 and ^5. Regular store hours will be observed. Also, the Employees’ Outlet Store in ue Draper section will be open on those during regular hours. audiometric testing stations in the com.- pany. Three are booths purchased from an outside manufacturer and are perm anently located in the Medical Depart ments at Eden, the Fieldale Towel Mill and the Columbus Towel Mill. In ad dition to these there are five testing stations in the company’s mobile health unit. To operate the equipment, there are trained and certified audiometric test ing technicians in the Medical Depart ments and at each outlying mill lo cation. A large group of the technicians from those locations were certified after com pleting a national standard course last June conducted by Dr. J. G. Springer, corporate medical director and a cer tified audiometric testing instructor. Their training is now being checked and updated by the central Medical De partment. As the new booths are cer tified, the technicians will be respon sible for the pre-employment testing of hearing as part of the job applicant’s physical examination. This is for the purpose of obtaining a baseline audiogram against which the person’s hearing can be compared annu ally. People are not excluded from em ployment because of a hearing handi cap but the baseline audiogram serves as a guideline in the protection of the person’s hearing. In addition to the regular audiometric tests, special studies and the annual ex aminations will be conducted by teams of certified technicians working out of the central Medical Department at Eden. They will use the equipment in the mo bile health unit as well as that at the outlying mills. The testing and close follow-up will make possible the identification of per sons with hearing loss and the main taining of records on a continuing basis of personnel who are exposed to noise levels which require them to wear hear ing protection.
