THE LOOKOUT March 26, 1973 PAGE 3 "I came to America for an education because the colleges in my country do not have the facilities of American colleges." Nghia Nguyen. 'GOD’S MESSENGERS’ SING MalacM, a Jesus- folk group from Columbia, South Carolina, played recently for M-AC stu dents in Gaither Chapel. The members in the group, v.'ho call themselves "God's Messengers", performed several original songs which they had written: the program also included tra ditional tunes and songs by such folk singers as John Den ver. At one point in the con cert, a Bible was brought out and Psalm 1bO was read, which spoke of prasing the Lord with music and loud percussion instruments. Several members of Maiachi were already familiar with the Non treat canmunity: Rick Rey nolds, on the bass guitar, is an alumnus of Montreat-Ander- son College, and Dale Cambell, lead singer and guitarist, visited our campus often last year. Although Maiachi is a newly organised group, their perfor mance was well worth seeing. Their songs were done with professional pride and skill and they allowed their person alities to come through be tween the songs, and talked with those in the audience from the stage. The students attending the concert adamant ly showed their enthusiasm by giving Maiachi two standing ovations. The members of the group made thenselves avail able following the concert at the Student Union to tal.k ivith intrested students. Maiachi will be participat ing in an al1-afternoon concert in Columbia, South Carolina, on April 1 with a well-known West Coast group called "Maranatha". So for an en joyable evening slide down to the S.U. and check out what your ^'^f^ods have been doing lately. Montreat Has Foreign Student from South Vietnam Nghia Nguyen is one of Mon treat's foriegn Students coming from South Vietnam. Nghia has been in America for about one and a half years. He said that he came to America to get a good ed- cation in America. He feels, that an education in America is more beneficial to him than a South Vietnamese education because his country does not have the facil ities of American colleges. Be fore coming to America Nghia heard much about racial discrim ination in America but he said he did not thin.k it was so bad after he got h'.?rij. When asked about American in tervention ii; South Vietnam Nghia replied that the general attitude of the South Vietnamese people was one of rejection towards the Americans. This, he explained, was because of communist propo- ganda which said that Americans were trying to take over South Vietnam. Many people misunder stood why Americans were there. Nghia said that this did not re flect his personal opinion and that he was thankful for American intervention. "The war is over for Americans but not ror the South Vietnamese," said Nghia, "they ore still fight ing." For South Vietnam to suc ceed in its efforts there needs to be a reform in the government said Nghia. He sAid that his country wants peace but would ra ther figlit than to. be under com munistic rule. Nghia plans to go on to a four year college in America after his gradustion this spring. After this he will return to South Vietnam. Congratulations and best wishes from The Lookout staff to Netta and Dan Newcomer, who were re cently married.
