Meet Montreot By Drew Stewart and Kortney Blythe We’ve selected a few students to share their spring break experi ences. Here are just a few tales of adventure and extraordinary happen ings. Freshman basketball player Anna Shaver shares, ”1 went to Vancouver, Canada to visit my brother and hang out with friends. Although it rained the whole time, 1 went shopping, ate sushi, and got to catch up with my brother. It was a great trip and good to get away from Montreat. 1 also saw Carol McMahan in the airport and that was really cool, she went to Vancouver Freshman Erin McGuire “went to a local Pee Dee Pride hockey game in Florence, SC. During, one intermission, the teams held a Port a-potty race for the fans. The object was to see which group of contestants could get dressed in full hockey gear the quickest. Many were falling on the ice trying to get the gear on before the buzzer went off. It was hilarious to watch." Sophomore Vince Norfleet didn’t have as much fun as some during break; “My lower right and lower left molars had cavities in them so one morning at 9am 1 had to go to the dentist. First they filled the two molars and then cleaned my teeth. 1 had my mouth propped open for two solid hours. The next day 1 was back at 8am for more dental fun. The filled the other two molars, and now my teeth are nice and healthy. My next dental appointment is May 16* at 1 p.m. Repairs Near Completion Continued from page 11 on the stones that will eventually restore the gate. Sawyer has laid cement for many Montreat projects, including some of the parking lots. He admits. “1 am trying my best to match it with the surrounding stone and make it rough looking. We have more solid, good quality cement than they did 80 years ago.’’ According to Pam Snipes, Montreat town administrator, “all state [financial] support stops at the gate. The roads in Montreat are not maintained by state funds from the Department of Transpor tation [DOT]. However, once a year the Powell Fund, money from gasoline tax, contributes around $42,000 dollars to the town’s roads. It is my understanding that if the gate w'ere not there, the DOT would take over Montreat roads.’’ The Montreat gate belongs to the Conference Center, and although there have been past accidents and repairs involving the gate, Rachel Miller, public relations manager, asserts, “it is a symbolic structure for Mon treat residents, conferees, and countless others. We have never considered removing the Gate.” An engineer for City of Ashe ville adds, “The gate is old and cracking. Eventually it will have to be rebuilt, maybe in 15-20 years, maybe more. However, in order for it to be redone by the state’s minimum standards, with steel and triple-A concrete, would cost around $70,000.” MONTREAT COLLEGE P.O. Box 1267 Montreat, NC 28757 Freshman Jeb Berkeley spent his whole vacation rock climb ing in Tennessee with Douglas Swords and Graham Ottley. “We climbed from 9 a.m. to sunset and ate tons of food! Pizza one night, spicy chili the next, chili night was interesting. Our tents smelled so nasty the next morning. Also, we didn’t take a shower for 7 days. But we met a lot of people from all over - Canada, New Hampshire, Alabama, Iowa, and Georgia.” Carolinians Prepare Continued from page 12 threats or attacks. “1 think drat this area is pretty safe,” says freshman Jessica Muller, “It’s Montreat, and nothing happens in Montreal.” In case of any threat, Homeland Security instructs citizens to safe guard themselves through compiling a family emergency plan, storing enough food for three days for each member of the family, and educat ing themselves about the various types of threats that could occur.
