Pleasant Community by Betty Blanton Prospect Community by Mrs, Broadus McGinnis The Baptist Women and their guests enjoyed their annual picnic with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hamrick at Houser Lake on Tuesday evening. The guests were their husbands and Miss Mari Wiles, youth director of the church. After the very tasty meal the lad,es had their meeting and the men enjoyed boating, horse hsoes aid lively conversation at the lakeside. Mrs. Ranny Blaiton pre sided over the meeting where several Mission Action Projects were accepted by the group. Mrs. Ida Simmons had charge of the very interesting program entitled “Christian Social Ministiers and Bold Mission Thurus.” She was assisted oy Miss Mari Wiles who had some first hand i.iformaibn on this work. Mrs. Gavlaid Jolley closed tine meet ing with the prayer calender. * ♦ Among those visiting the Steve Goodes last week were Mrs. Nancy Anthony, Mrs. Joni Goode and Brandon, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Griffin, Jr., Mrs, Mary Griffin, Dr. Eugene Poston, Mrs. Sandy Alexander and Christy, Mark Anthony, Mrs . Faye Street and Amy, Mrs. Gloria Ivester, Mrs. Linda Raynor, Annette and Jason, Mr. Pail White and John and Kevin Black. **mr. and Mrs . Goode, Amber and Andy, Chris Griffin land Pam Arthur were Sunday lunch guests of Mrs. Goode and Chris’s father, Mr. Frank Griffin, Jr. and Mrs, Griffin in Shelby. * ♦ Mrs. Cleo Wallace and Max Norville visited the arts and crafts fair in Burnsville last week and also Mr. and Mrs. Ealon Houser of Cliffside who were camping at Crabtree Meadows Campground. ♦ * Mr. and Mrs. Roger Jolley and family of Decard, Tenn, visited with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alton Jolley last week. Mr. and Mrs. Oren Jolley, Mr . aid Mrs, Baxter Jolley, Ann and Amy Jolley, are vacationing this week at Gatlinburg, Tenn. * * Miss Ollie Bridges and Mrs. Cleo Wallace visited Mrs. Fannie Roberts at the home of her sister, Mrs. Jennifer Wray in Spindale. They, also visited Mrs. Wallace’s sister, Mrs. Daisy Daggerhard of Spindale and Miss Irene Pritchard at the Edgewood Nursing Home. Day Camp was enjoyed by the children for three morn ings last week. Mari Wiles led them in games, Bible Stories, Puppet making and other activites. On Wed nesday, they enjoyed a cookout at Honeysuckle Park in Cliffside. The youth enjoyed a “Pop and Popping’’ at their Bible Study on Thursday evening, ** Mr. and Mrs. Horace Scruggs of Boiling Springs visited with Mr. and Mrs, Lewis Jolley on Sunday afternoon. *♦ Among those from this community attending the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Mr, and Mrs. Guy Gillespie at Trinity Activity Building on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Dawson and Mrs. Shull Whitaker. ** Miss Lisa Lawing of Shelby was guest soloist for the mid week service. Lisa is a rising sophomore at Mars Lavonia Community by Linda Petty Visiting during the week with Misses Georgia and Wilma McCraw were Mrs. Mary Humphries, Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie McAbee and Jason, and Mr, and Mrs. Charles Davis and Myra. ** Mr. and Mrs. Mike Petty, Sean and Tony, of Chesnee visited over the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. P.G. Petty. ♦ * Mr. and Mrs. Kyle Davis visited during the week with Mrs. Catherine Ruppe, ** Sunday afternoon visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Edus Scruggs were Mr. and Mrs. Z.O. Cobb. ♦ ♦ Mr. and Mrs. Loyd McCraw, Mrs. Janie McCraw and Mrs. Ophelia McCraw visited on Sunday afternoon with Mrs. Gertrude Walker in Cherryville. ♦ * Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest McCraw were Mr. and Mrs. Kirk Humphries and Mrs. J.A, Bartee. Paul McCraw of Winston-Salem spent the weekend with them. Mr. and Mrs. Roger McCraw and children of Shelby, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Petty, Richard and Dale, and Mr. and Mrs. Scott Burleson were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Elwyn McCraw. ** Joe Beaver is a patient in Cleveland Memorial Hospital in Shelby, ** TTie Lottie Moon Circle met on Tbursday evening with Mrs. Shirley Ellis. Local Killed At Forest City Gordon Atkins Jr,, 51, of North Main Street, Boiling Springs, died of gunshot wounds 8:30 p.m. Friday at Rutherford Hospital. Atkins was shot in a domestic quarrel at a Florence Street house in Forest City. Police were planning Tuesday to bring charges against Myron Ritchie Tesseneer, a Forest City man, in the shooting. A native of Cleveland County, Atkins was a self- employed logger and a Korean War veteran. He was buried Monday at Ganatt’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetary. Atkins is survivied by his parents, Gordon Atkins of. Mooresboro and Carrie Willis Atkins of New Cumberland, Pa.; four sons, and two daughters; a brother, and one grandchild. Hill College and did a splendid job singing for the service which was conducted by Mari Wiles. * * Mr. and Mrs. William Pitnam, Mr. and Mrs . Jimmy Putnam were visitors to Charleston, S.C. over the week end. The Jimmy Putnams have been visiting wit their parents this summer. They are students a’ ASU in Boone where they will be returning to in a few days to assume their studies for another year. ** Mr. Ed Adamerorich and his daughter, Sherri, of La Trobe, Pa. and Mr. Gene Mintz and Ms. Saron Lawson of Augusts, Ga. were the guests of Dr. and Mrs. Karl Jordan, Jr. last week. ** The Wayne Housers of Florence, S.C. were visitors at Houser Lake the early part of the week. ** Mr. and Mrs. Everette Wiles and Eileen ofSumraerville, S.C, were the guests of Mari Wiles on Saturday. Mari and Lisa Lawing of Shelby attended the Beauty Pageant in Hickory on Saturday evening, Lisa’s roomate at Mars Hill was a contestant and placed in the Swim Suit Division. The girls report a very good pageant that they enjoyed. ♦ ♦ Mrs. Robert Hamrick, Mrs. R.J. Cromer and Mrs. Sue Da;;gerhard of Gaffney, S.C. were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Greene of Arden on Frida night. On Saturday, they all visited the Biltomre House in the morning and enjoyed a shopping spree in the afternoon before re- turni.Tg home. + + Mrs. Katheren Murray and Mrs. Linda Hamrick were Sunday visitors in the Garland Jolley home. * * Mrs. Ida Simmons attended the McGinnis reunion at Beaver Dam Activity Building on Sunday. She reports having lots of enjoymnt from being with, sharing a neal with, and ta'king with family members that had not been together since last reunion. * Tin We extend community sympathy to Rev. Ronald McSwain and family in the death of his grandmother, Mrs. Mae Wood In China Grove. Mrs. Wood died on Saturday afternoon and her funeral was Monday in China Grove. Mr. and Mrs. Wofford Scruggs, Melanie and Cliff, of Winston-Salem spent Thursday night with Mr. and Mrs. G.V. Scruggs. ** Mrs. Ocie Elmore and Mrs. Ava McGinnis visited Friday with Mrs, Minnie Scruggs and Mrs. Louise Scruggs. * * Mr. and Mrs. Wade Harmon of Chesnee, S.C. visited Wednesday with Mrs. Annie Hames, Mrs. Eula Suttles and James Camp. ♦ ♦ Mr. and Mrs. Roger Ledbetter and Chad were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ray McCraw. ** Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Phillips and Tim of New Pleasant were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Barnes and daughters. ** Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hutchens of Charlotte spent from Friday until Sunday with Mrs, Gazzie Harmon. ** Mrs. Eller West of Cherokee County ate dinner Sunday with Mrs. Annie Jolley and Louise. ** Mrs. Lorene Ledford visited Saturday with Nina and Pettus Mosteller. Sunday, Mrs. James Stoll of Kings Mountain visited them. ** Georgia McC raw visited Wednesday with Madison McC raw and sisters. ** Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Jones attended the Horton re union Sunday at Henrietta Baptist Church fellowship hall. A large crowd attended including those from North and South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. ** Mrs. Howard Clayton of Charlotte is spending this week with Mr. and Mrs. Francis Fasolino. ** Rev. John Godfrey of Cooper’s Gap ate supper Friday with Mrs. Clara Godfrey and Charles. «* Bobby Joe Ruppe of Cowpens, Mrs. Golan Martin, Danny and Clay Johnson of Cliffside visited last week. Trinity Community by Doris Scruggs The Baptist Women’s Circle , along with their families, joined together at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Daves for a covered dish supper recently. There were sixteen present to join the firm and fellowship for. the evening, *♦ Close friends and relatives entertained Mrs. Judy Green with a baby shower on Saturday night at the Comm unity Building. A good number attended. Delicious re freshments consisting of punch, nuts, and cake were served to all the guests who attended. Judy received many nice gifts for the future baby. ** Mr. and Mrs. Grady Goode, Sr. spent several days at Myrtle Beach recently. ** Mrs. Annie Garrison of Gastonia spent a couple of days recnetly with Mr. and Mrs. James McKinney, ** Mrs. Clara Beason, Lynn and Quinn, spent their vacation touring several points of interest in Washington, D.C. Along the way they visited the North Carolina State Zoo in Asheboro. * ♦ Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Yelton and daughters of Col umbia, S.C, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. E.C. McKinney. * + During the absence of our pasor, the Rev. Arthur Colleem and family, the youth and associate pastor, Arthur Yount, delivered the Sunday morning service. The following people joined the church by letter. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Wright and Miss Doris Weaver. Rev. Boyd Luckadoo preached the Sunday night service while the pastor was on vacation. Mrs. Thelma Beason along with Miss Doris Jones and Mrs. Maude Lauring of Shelby spent the weekend with Melissa Lauring of Spruce Pine. While there they attended a craft fair in Burnsville. Also, on Saturday, they attended the Pla;/house in Burnsville and saw “The Fanticks.’’ ♦ * Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Harris, Cheryle and Dawn, and Mrs. Catherine Greene vacationed in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Mr. and Mrs. George Skinner and Richard and Seven, have returned from a three weeks visit to England. They visited the parents of Mrs. Skinner and was the. first time in several years that they had seen their family there. ** Mr, and Mrs. Grady Padgett of Spindale were Sunday afternoon guests of Mr. and Mrs, Coran Padgett. Mr. Padgette returned home from being a patient at Crawley Memorial Hospital on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bridges, Jennifer and Carla, spent the weekend in Gatlinburg, Tenn. and Pigon Forge. ** Mrs. Selma Harris and Dawn attended the Hamrick reunion held at the fellowship hall of Bethel Church in Ellenboro. ♦ * Mr. and Mrs. Marion Scruggs went with the Phil Toney Tours to Hiwassee, Ga. on Saturday. They att ended the Georgia Mountain Fair which is known for having a lot of crafts. Later in the day, they went to Helon, Ga, and spent some time there. It was quite an enjoyable trip. Mrs. Bobby Bridges and Kristi and Mrs. Don English and Lisa went to Carrowinds on Saturday. They went especially to see the “Oak Ridge Boys.’’ Flint Hill Community by Ruby Ledbetter The Graduate’s Sunday School class had a cookout at the home of Terry and Ladell Sheild’s Monday night. ♦ * On Monday, Aug. 17, the youth and adult choirs will have a music class from 6:30 to 9:00, taught by Ladell Shields in the music room. On Sunday, August 16th, the Pearson-Harrill reunion will meet at Ranlo, N.C. ♦ * Sunday morning at 9:50 there will be a meeting of teachers and secretarys with the Sunday School super intendent. ** Mr. and Mrs. Ned Blanton and family camped in the mountains of Western North Carolina over the weekend. ** Mrs. Herman Ledbetter of Spartanburg, S.C. visited Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Byars, Kim and Patti, on Saturday. Chucky Long has returned to ASTU at Boone after spending a few days with his parents here. ♦ » Mr, and Mrs. Ed Davis of Williamston spent several days with Rev. and Mrs, Ed Sessom. Michael Sessom of Illinois came on Thursday for a visit. Then on Sat urday the Sessom’s went to ASTU at Boone to meet Ann Sessom who had been teaching there. The Michael Sessom’s left there and returned to their home in Illinois. ** Mrs. Nancy Freeman, Charles and Debra, and Mafrey Sessom spent Monday and Tuesday at Cherokee Indian Reservation. ♦ * Mr. and Mrs. Jody Hamrick and family of Hickory Qrove, S.C. were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Anthony. if* The backyard Bible Club met this week with Mrs. Gynell Scruggs. ♦ * The annual WMU planning meeting was Monday morning from 9 until 12 o’clock. ** Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ledbetter of Spartanbburg, S.C., Mr. and Mrs. James Long, Mr. and Mrs. Durham Ledbetter and Mr. and Mrs. Gus Gregory of Shelby met Mr. and Mrs. William Howington of New London at Blowing Rock and spent Thursday through Sunday there. This is an annual get together of all the Ledbetter brothers and sisters and their husbands and wives. ** Miss Jana Ledbetter of Spartanburg, S.C. and Mrs. Cathy Calvert of Gastonia were here to attend the tea for Wanda Bridges, bride elect , and Mrs. Richard Blanton, recent bride, at the home of Mrs. Gail Bridges on Sunday. ** Misses Emily and Jennifer Rochester were honored at a birthday party Saturday at their home in honor of their 7th birthday. Paul McCraw of Winston Salem has been visiting re latives for several days. He along with Mr. and Mrs. Kirk Humphries and Mrs. J.A. Bartee honored on Sunday Mr. Earnest McCraw tor his 84th birthday at his home. Mr. and Mrs, Weldon Bratton attended the home coming Sunday at Abington Creek Baptist Church near Gaffney. ♦ * Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mosteller and daughters of Gaffney had a cookout Saturday with Mrs, Effie Mosteller, *♦ Mr. and Mrs. Joe Allen of Hamlet spent Tuesday night with Mrs. Myrtle Spake. Boiling Springs Community by Louise Moore Mr. and Mrs. Bud Brooks and son, Joe, and Mrs. Harry McKee and children, Beth and Mike, attended a bull show in Douglas, Wy. last week where Mike parti cipated in the event. Mrs. McKee had to be flown to Charlotte during their visit there to have back surgery at Presbyterian Hospital on Monday. She is in room C455. * ♦ Mr. and Mrs. Dock Whisnant spent the weekend with their daughter andher family, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Malone, Mark, Mike and Chris in Fayetteville. *♦ Mr. and Mrs, Carl Weaver attended a meeting at Hot Springs Dorland Bell Presbyterian Church on Sunday. ** Mr. and Mrs, Marvin Splawn spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs, Cecil Van Dyke in Charlotte. Mrs. Mac Greene is a patient in Cleveland Memorial Hospital. ** Community sympathy is expressed to Mrs. Myrtle McSwain in the death of her sister, Mrs. Fairy Allen of Grover, ** Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Moore of Spartanburg, S.C. visited with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.D, Moore over the weekend. ** Mrs, Esther Banning has returned home after being a patient in Crawley Memorial Hospital. ♦ * Mrs. Victor Turner and Mr. Jerry Crowe of Forest City visited Miss Etna Holland Sunday. Amilia Scruggs , da^hter of Mr. and Mrs. Hal Scruggs, was honored with a birthday dinner on her third birthday Sunday at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Scruggs. Mrs. Obbie Bridges of Ellenboro spent Thursday with her mother, Mrs, Madge Russ. ♦ * Frances and Todd Pearson spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs, Kenneth Russ and children. Boiling Springs Reports Fire No fires were reported to the Boiling Springs Dept., which took advantage of the week’s lull to train the last four days in Pump II, a class sponsored by the N.C. Dept, of Insurance. Police Aug, 6. Police stopped a motorist on S. Main and made the charge of reckless driving, Aug, 4. A one-car crash of a ’69 Chevy at West College injured one and caused $800 damage to the automobile. OrficGr James Clary is invest^ating.
