CHRISTMAS Christmas is a time for cheer Not a time for fear So let’s celebrate Jesus’ birth Unto all the earth Richard Haynes Sixth Grade Fallston School Mrs. Elliott’s Class One Christmas night I woke up out of bed. I saw the weirdest thing. It was Santa Claus flying through . . the air dropping presents down the chimney. So l' //) O-fca-S StxrraH went downstairs and looked up the chimney and one of the presents got stuck. Suddenly I heard something on the roof. The next thing I knew Santa Claus was sitting right in front of me. He had ashes and soot all over him. He said, “just wanted to get the present down the chimney.” I have something ' eac.Ke.f special for you. He took out a tricycle from his sack and I said “What a tricycle.” But he said, “not for you. This is what I have for you. I got you a motorcycle. Ann Humphries, 4th grade. Miss Moore’s class, No. 3 school “What are we cooking today?” is a common question in the EMH class at Elizabeth Elementary School. Alohma Falls, teacher, and Lynn Daves, aide, have pooled their culinary talents to make a unit on the four food groups for the students from all over Cleveland County. The unit began with a simple exercise in cutting and pasting pictures of foods and it branched out from there to cooking experiences, recipe writing, and field trips to the dairy and the grocery store. The first food preparation experience for the students was churning fresh ir“'^ butter. Each child had his turn with Grandma’s churn. After the butter and buttermilk cooled overnight in the refrigerator the group made a batch of but termilk biscuits and ate them with the butter and some currant jelly. While they were still studying the bread and cereals group they made doughnuts from canned biscuits. Also included in the food preparation ex periences were popping popcorn, making potato candy, and freezing ice cream. The students plan to use their knowledge of the four food group to produce a cookbook for PhrictmaQ Mr. Clyde Buckner, known as “The Yam ner,” entertained Elizabeth School students.
