Page 6 THE NEW BERN MIRROR, NEW BERN, N. C. Friday, July 25, 1958 As Seen in The Mirror's of Athletes and Events Millions of Seedlings for Planting on State's Farins When Hayes Clement, a recent Duke graduate, was in college, his greatest sports thrills came as cen ter for the Blue Devil basketball ers. He has found this summer that being a fan can bring some unfor- getable moments, too. Attending a baseball game at Fenway park in Boston, he was lucky enough to catch a ball from Jackie Jen sen’s big bat. Anyone who has ever scrambled for a ball clouted into the stands at a major league game knows that the tall, soft- spoken New Bernian added no or dinary souvenir to his prized pos sessions. Still another thrill was forth coming, however. Having moved to Atlanta, where a job was awaiting him, he naturally visited the ball park to see the Crackers in action. Chattanooga was the opposing team, but that meant nothing to Hayes. He didn’t know that anoth er New Bern sports figure, Bunky Stewart, had rejoined the Chatta nooga club after playing with Mi ami earlier in the season. Luck was in young Clement’s corner again. To his great surprise Bunky was the starting pitcher for the Lookouts, and went all the way to win 3 to 2. There were a couple of mighty happy New Bern boys in the ball park that night, and they were happier still when they got together after the game. Bunky’s future remains unpre dictable. The slender southpaw was a mediocre performer in his repeated trials with the Washing ton Senators, a team that paid him $12,000 to sign his first pro fessional contract. The Washington front office is noted for its penny pinching, so that $12,000 figure in dicated a real eag’6rness to laM the little lefty. Without trying to alibi for Bunky’s poor record with a team that excels in poor records itself, we have always believed that he would have done better had he $50.00 Allowance for Your Old Range Regardless of Age or Condition on a New COMPLETELY AUTOMATIC PYROFAX GAS RANGE Low Down Payment Easy Terms Born.so OAs scRvictt Craven County Gas Co. been given more work on the mound. Stewart is frail, compared with the average major league hurler, but at New Bern high school and in the ' Coastal Plain League the more he pitched the better he got. At Washington, Bunky did a lot of bench warming. Usually when he was called upon to hurl it was under adverse circumstances. Ev en with shrewder handling results might have been the same. Two managers and the Washington front office evidently thought so. Injuries didn’t help matters in his past seasons, and some observ ers have said that Bunky hurt his own chances drastically by failing to keep in shape by training the year around. Ted Williams, to our way of thinking, has prolonged his great career by carefully guarding his health, not only during summer months, but during the off season as well. That’s why he was able to bounce back on short notice, after his two hitches in the Mla- rine Corps. Age is one handicap facing Bunky now that he can do noth ing about. Years liave rolled by, and recognized ability can’t off set their toll. He may yet achieve major league stature, but he won’t be able to waste much time doing it. At any rate, here’s wishing the best, for the only New Bern boy to ever crash the Big ’Time, if on ly for a little while. Tar Heel foresters will have an estimated 95 million seedlings avail able for planting during the com ing season. While the 1958-59 supply is great er than this year’s, farmers are urged to place their orders as soon as possible. Walt Keller, forestry specialist for the N. C. Still more are forthcoming. Chief benefactor is the Newbold Training school, a Negro nistitu- tion at Fort Barnwell, Where con struction of additions included £ combination auditorium-gymnasi um, a science laboratory, a voca tional agricultural shop and an administrative suite. Additions at the Hfjvelock white high school won’t be finished until January, and even then a woefully overcrowded condition will still exist. When pompleted, the work at Havelock will provide seven more classrooms, a library and^ music room, a science laboratory *and an administrative suite. Bridgeton has two more primary classrooms. Needless to say, they’ll be put to good use. Aside f»om the aforementioned construction, there has been the usual painting and tidying up this summer throughout the entire sys tem. STUDY BACKS VACCINE Chicago — Research has shown that Salk anti-polio vaccine does not damage the brain, according to a recent report by the American Medical Association. Dr. Frederic A. Gibbs and an associate prepared the report aft er an “extended clinical study’’ of 852 persons who received three Salk polio shots each at centers in Chicago, Rockford, 111., and at Richmond, Va. 323 S. Last sum mer, a mid- western auto mobile club re ceived 112,240 road service calls for stalled cars or overheated en- gin e s and 61,000 calls for tire troubles. Such exasper ating predicaments can be avoid ed, say AAA officials, by these few simple precautions. First of all, make sure -that the radiator and fan belt are in top working condition. In heavy traf fic, drive in high gear as much as possible, not second or low, to prevent overheating the engine. . Check the water level in the radiator and liquid in the bat tery each time you buy gas. Both evaporate quickly in hot weather. If the radiator should boil over, pull off the road and wait until the thermometer gauge drops be fore removing the radiator cap to add water. Since tire tread wears much faster in hot weather, keep tires inflated to the exact specifica tions recommended by the manu facturer. Overheated gasoline may cause a temporary vapor lock in the gasoline line (a condi tion in which the car acts as if it is out of gas even though the tank may be full.) _ If this happeps, don’t waste time and battery power grinding the starter. Let the engine cool a few minutes and then try it. As the engine cools, the vapor lock dissipates. And during the few minutes’ wait, your temper will probably cool down a bit, too I WOW! Chicago — The birthday cake was a hamburger patty, favors were bones, and prizes rubber squeaking mice. And all the guests barked. The occasion? Thistle’s 4-month anniversary party. Thistle is a Scottie owned by Jane Lezak, 5. Jane thought up the doggy idea herself, and invitations went out to Thistle’s playmates in the neigh borhood. Ten showed up. For presents Thistle received candy, lollipops, a $1 bill, and an insulated travel bag. At last re ports, Thistle was “dog-tired.” Sion out that the be changed Service, points expected supply can by losses to insects, diseases and storms.
