•IN NEW BERN TODAY
It’s no secret that many New
Bern High school students need
financial assistance when they
graduate and seek enrollment in
college. The Albert Bangert loan
fund is a big help to them, espe
cially if they aren’t fortunate to
rate a scholarship. Get details from
local school officials.
Because the idea may spread
eventually to North Carolina, here
is something we ran across that
we think you’ll find interesting.

Loan Plan will go into operation
in that state at the start of next
spring’s semester.
Three business groups—^Indiana
State Chamber of Commerce, the
Indianapolis Chamber of Com
merce and the Indiana Bankers
Association—are sponsoring the
formation of this new college-stu
dent loan fund backed by private
capital.
Indiana is the first state in a
proposed nation-wide non-profit
student-loan group known as Unit
ed Student Aid Funds. A student,
a resident of Indiana, who has fin
ished his freshman year with good
grades, will be able to borrow up
to $1,000 a year for three years, as
a bank loan without collateral or
endorsement at a single interest
rate not to exceed six percent.

Repayment of the loan is to start
within five months of graduation
and will be spread" over a three-
year period. Chairman of the coun
cil formed to direct the plan is Ed
win B. Newill of Indianapcdis, re
cently retired general manager of
Allison Division of General Motors
Corporation and a GM viccrpresi-
dent.
Some of North Carolina’s large
industrial firms may take to the
idea too. If they do, it can be a
godsend to Tar Heel high school
graduates in the years to come.
Perhaps we’ll be hearing more
about the United Student Aid Fund
in the near future.

Home is the dearest spot on

affections. — Mary Baker Eddy.
