Friday, March 22, 1963 MIRROR MEDITATION By EMMITT L. BRINSON It was Indeed a pleasure and revelation to visit the Science Fair at our local High School Gymnasium last week. Some of the effort and knowledge projected on the part of our youth was almost unbelievable. The projects presented every phase of advanced science, and touched on practically every avenue of recorded knowledge of mankind. As I moved throughout the many rows of projects, awe stricken, many thrilling throughts ran through my mind. The countless man hours In volved must have been tremen dous; the guided thought, the Intricate artwork In minute de tail; the talent, the Imagination, irs Broddy's FOR DRY CLEANING & LAUNDRY Pick’Up and Delivery Service 320 First Street ME 7-2159 1918-45 Yrt. Each project was very expertly Illustrated—Each an “A” plus. Would we say amazing? Beyond that; It was phenomlnall As my thoughts drifted It dawned on me. This youth Is tomorrow’s America! Should we be afraid? I think not, and my heart swelled with pride. This generation of youth, who are those have been accused of complacency—spoiled and irresponsible. Presented with challenge, free minds in a free nation can rise to anything! Minds that are endowed with the anxiety to seek and probe have no limitation, no bounds. It leads to the infinite knowl edge of the Master Scientist— the creator—of God himself. How much different It m ist be In a country where youth Is regimented and brain washed. Only that which is required of youth In such nations is placed before him. He dare not express himself beyond that point. It Is here our system of Government and our system of education Is far superior. For knowledge itself can never be subdued. Once youth possesses the romance and drive of learn ing, his mind Is as powerful and moving as life Itself--(a tiny seed becomes fertile and cracks the greatest boulder or rock)—Nothing can stop it for It has tapped the source of power as laid down by the Creator himself. It flowers Into eternal truth. Communism can not afford to educate Its youth beyond a certain point. For knowledge and truth becomes the executioner of slavery and atheism itself. In this area, dictatorial regimes would never dare compete with a free world, for It would destroy the walls and chains that bind men’s minds and souls. As I moved about and studied the workings of the atoms and DNA’s as Illustrated, an even greater thrill came over me. We in this nation have mis takenly taken the steps to pre vent religion from being taught In our schools, but, with this kind of advance it’s Impossible to keep God out. Here were students with advanced knowl edge looking squarely In the face of the Creator, not as a MASONIC SUN.-WED. niANCli NIIYKN LAIIlUiMCi; HAKYl'Y MAHTHA HYMR -IIAI, , WALLIS KAHY M1:KUII,L MICHAITL WIIJIINU an miyiishi hmhki , JOHN STURGES ■ H EDWARD ANHALT ■ j ^ ' religion but as a truth and with consent of a government separate from religion. This God In reality Is not a religion. It Is a truth that shall grow with each step of mankind, for ever keeping man subordinate to, and a spectator of, his law and order. Here youth travels the road step by step viewing the build ing blocks of life and matter, devouring the knowledge as re corded by his predecessors and being guided to the suceeding door marked with a new chal lenge; "Eternal truth lies be yond—ENTER”. Now It be comes his turn to open new doors, new fields, new layers of truth. A never ending conti nuity of a probing and seeking process, finding new vulnerable spots where the keeper of all truths allows him to take a further glimpse. Evolution? Yes, but God’s! Rural electric co-ops in North Carolina had ac- cunuilated almost $22 million in tax-free profits by the end of 1960, the latest year for which offi cial statistics are available. These reports which REA co-ops made to Washington also show their “net margins” or profits are about $3 million per year. The stockpile of REA co-op profits is getting bigger every day at the expense of all taxpayers. It happens in two ways: 1) Electric co-ops borrow all their capital from the Federal government at 2 per cent in terest . . . just about half of what the govern ment is paving to borrow money. 2) They also are exempt from franchise, property and income taxes. So they make little or no contribution to support local, state and federal governments. Does it seem right that all taxpaying citizens are required to keep on shouldering the bill for REA co-op subsidies while these co-ops are stock piling big profits? And especially when you con sider that the job for which they are subsidized— that is, extending electric service to rural areas that do not have it—is virtually complete. Why not let your elected representatives know how you feel about this unneeded subsidy. c CAROLINA POWER A UOHT COMPANY^ An investor-owned, taxpaying, public utility company
