According to our Compton’s
Encyclopedia, the Institution
was founded to provide training
for Sunday school teachers. In
1874 John Heyl Vincent, editor
of the SundaySchool Journal and
later a bishop of the Methodist
Episcopal church, and Lewis
Miller, a manufacturer of
Akron, Ohio, organized a
summer class which met at
Fair Point on Lake Chautauqua.
The name of the meeting place
was soon changed to Chau
tauqua. It was one of the first
institutions to offer summer
study. Interest was so great
that by 1879 instruction was
being gdven In foreign languages
and education methods. Rapid
expansion followed, with es
tablishment of a School of The
ology and a Chautauqua Univer
sity.
