Gourds are very ornamental, and some are very useful. The sponge or dish-cloth gourd Is a perfect dish wash er. The nest-egg gourd, the darning and dieter gourds are all very useful. Many gourds are good for eating utensils and magazine stands. Gourds are subject to a num ber of diseases. Mildews and leaf spots are the most pre valent. Ready prepared bor- deaux mixture will take care of this. If you are bothered with wilt disease, try changing to a new location each year. It Is time to plant the peony now. These are extremely hardy. They come back year after year. The foliage Is at tractive without the bloom. Grow these In rich soil with dried cow manure, with eyes about three Inches from the top of the ground. If you can only afford a few, plant Edulls Superba (pure pink), Flestlva Maxima (pure white) and Karl Rosenfleld (dark red). Dutch Iris bloom In late May or early June. Plant them In a well drained location, and they will bloom year after year. This week, for our Buds and Blossoms poem, we have selected these humorous lines from the pen of M. T, Mor rison, which he calls “What The Choir Sang About The New Bonnet.” A foolish little maiden bought a foolish little bonnet, With a ribbon and a feather and a bit of lace upon It; And that the other maidens of the little town might know It, She thought she’d go to meet ing next Sundayjusttoshow It. But though the little bonnet was scarce larger than a dime The getting of It settled prov ed to be a work of time; So when ’twas fairly tied all the bells had stopped their ringing, And when she came to meet ing, sure enough, the folks were singing. So the foolish little maiden stood and waited at the door, And she shook her ruffles out behind and smoothed them out before. “Hallelujah, hallelujah” sang the choir above her head— “Hardly knew you! Hardly knew youl” were the words she thought they said. This made the little maiden feel so very, very cross That she gave her little mouth a twist, her little head a toss; For she thought the very humn they sang was all about her bonnet. And she would not wait to list en to the sermon or the prayer, But pattered down the silent street and hurried up the stair Till she reached her little bureau, and In a bandbox on It, Had hidden safe from critic’s eye her foolish little bonnet.
