Buds
AND
Blossoms
By
MAMIE MILLER
“Let all bitterness, and
wrath, and anger, and clamour,
and evil speaking, be put away
from you, with all malice; And
be ye kind one to another, tend
er hearted, forgiving one anoth
er, even as God for Christ’s
sake hath forgiven you.”—Eph.
4:31, 32.
Nuts, pods, burrs and branch

where you may get them easily.
They also make thoughtful gifts

for friends. Many people would
enjoy a dozen nice pine burrs.
Bag bulbs for gifts. They
make delightful surprises for
the gardener. Dig extra shrub
bery from your garden for new
home borders. A gift of your
own growing is worth twice as
much as one you buy.
plan the birds’ diet for the
winter. Put feeders where the
birds can get to them easily,
and where It Is easy for you
to get to. Make bird crumbles,
mutton suet cakes, and fill
pine cones with suet before you
actually need them.
Plant or replant all shrub
bery before the ground freezes.
Cut dead limbs from trees.
It is a good season to dig up the
soil for after Christmas plant
ing, Turn the grass under and
let it decay before planting.
This week, for our Buds and
Blossoms peom, we have selec
ted these lines by an unknown
author;
Like a bread without the spread-
in’,
Like a pudding without sauce,
Like amattress withoutbeddin’,
Like a cart without a boss,
Like a door without a latch-
string,
Like a fence without a stile.
Like a dry and barren creek

What's
COOKING?
If you like to squeeze and
poke at vegetables and fruits
before you make a purchase,
you’ve probably been frustra
ted atNewBern’snewestsuper-
market. Almost everything on
the produce counter is attrac
tively wrapped. The stuff
is visible but not touchable.
When was the last time you
had waffles at your house? You
can get them conveniently pack
aged at almost any store now,
and some ofthe ones we’ve tried
are quite tasty. Just put them in
your toaster, and in a few
moments you’re on your way.
Try this recipe for peanut
butter chiffon pie. If you don’t
fancy It, the kids will eat your
share.

plain gelatin; 1 cup of cold water;
2 egg yolks, well beaten; 1/4

bed—
Is the face without a smile.
Like a house without a door-
yard.
Like a yard without a flower,
Like a clock without a main
spring,
That will never tell the hour;
A thing that sort o’ makes you
feel
A hunger all the while--
Oh, the saddest sight that ever
was
Is a face without a smile!
The face of man was built for
smiles,
An’ thereby he is blest
Above the critters of the field,
The birds an’ all the rest;
He’s just a little lower
Than the angels in the skies,
An’ the reason Is that he can
smile;
Therein his glory lies!
