Ring Out the Old; Ring in the New From its beginning at Mid dle street, the New Bern ex change of Carolina Telephone has grown to serve over 13,000 telephones in the New Bern area. The New Bern telephone ex change also serves as the long distance switching center for 12 telephone exchanges in this area and for a large part of Eastern North Carolina. The Smaw Building has been removed to accommodate a 35,558 square-foot addition to the present telephone building. The building enlargement will require construction of a third floor to the existing structure with a gross expenditure of $984,000. Equipment to be Installed in the building addition will pro vide additional local and long distance facilities. The local service improvements will in clude the most modern elec- tonic switching equipment with provisions for “touchcalling.” With “touch calling,” tele- Put Social Security Number On Tax Payments To IRS Greensboro — Some North Carolina taxpayers make pay ments that cannot be properly credited to their account, ac cording to J. E. Wall, District Director for North Carolina. This happens when a payment is received without an accom panying form or notice or be comes separated from identi fying documents. Payments that IRS can’t identify are put in a special account until proper identifi cation can be made. Wall said. This necessarily delays action on that account. To avoid such identification problems, Wall asked taxpay ers to put their Social Securi ty number on their check or money order. It will also be helpful to note the type of tax and period covered by the pay ment. Long distance switching equipment, including micro- wave, radio and circuit equip ment plus associated items, will complete the Installation. The total project, scheduled for completion in 1971, will re quire an expeditureofover $2,- 680,000. The construction of the tele phone building on the site of the Smaw Building evokes memor ies of old New Bern. The Smaw Building was built in 1919 on the site of the Hancock Street Christian church. The church was built in 1887 and burned in 1918, according to John R. Taylor, a member of the Broad Street Christian church. Carolina Telephone also purchased the Hanks House on Pollocks street and this build ing will be removed.
