There's no sure-fire recipe for worthwhile popularity, and you don’t want to be popular if it means giving up the things you know are right doing the wrong things in an effort to “belong” isn’t smart. If the crowd thinks it is, you’ll be better off finding new friends. Your best chance to earn the respect and affection of others is simply to be yourself. Everyone of us, if we’re a wise teen-ager, appreciates com plete honesty in someone else. A teen-ager who is honest and sincere will recognize his or her own faults and failings, and won’t be as anxious to point out the faults of others. If you’ll only be yourself, and assuming that you’re a good person at heart, you will discover that the young people with whom you are associated will trust you, and feel “com fortable” with you. We are only kidding ourselves when we assume a personality that doesn’t belong to us. You know yourself that you can tell when a person isn’t really sincere, and they can tell if you aren’t sincere. This isn’t just true during our fleeting years as a teen-ager. The adults we love and respect have the same fine qualities that we want to strive for. Yesterday was when vote manipulating in New Bern’s Fourth Ward could have put Cook County, Illinois, into a realm of model behavior, and reduced the Watergate scandal to a minor episode. Names of citizens who had been entombed in Cedar Grove Cemetery for 25 years or more remained on the registration book, and these departed souls were figured into the balloting that made them popular as a young person, still hold true. They are always going to hold true, so learn to be yourself, and if you aren’t what you ought to be, change your faults. As someone has said, we are our own best salesmen. Every minute of the day we advertise what we are. Let’s make sure we are what we advertise, and popularity that we have earned will probably come our way. YOUIL FIND YOUR TOP TUNES AT . . . The ballot box in the Fourth was always last to report, and it provided what was necessary for victory. Yesterday was when a certain type of switch blade knife got named for a local woman by New Bern’s police force, and understandably so. Time and again she did away with ardent admirers, and beat the rap by claiming the stabbing was necessary to preserve her purity. Yesterday was when the doctor came to your house, if you were sick, and usually had the ri^t pills in his black satchel to start you on the road to recovery. After prescribing, he would rock awhile in a chair by your bed, and grunt with you. Them grunt doctors are gone forever.
