Township 9 Fire Township 9 Holds A First Township 9 Fire Company and Rescue Squad teamed up to hold its 1st Spring Festival and Fireman’s Day. Many activities were held during the day. The first activity at 10 o’clock, was a 42 piece parade. Fire trucks from surrounding fire companies, church floats, politicians, Shriners, and rescue squad vehicles made up the 3/4 mile long parade. 'The parade started at Bethany Christian Church and proceeded to Roscoe Case’s store and returned. The big feed was next on the agenda with some of the best barbecue in the country being served. The afternoon was filled with a country store yard sale at half price, clogging, singing and square dancing. Two high points of the day were the awarding of a plaque to Allie E. McCosley as Fireman of the Year, and the dedication of Fire 'Truck #3502 to the charter members of Township 9 Fire Company. Mr. McCosley is a charter member of the company and a member of the Rescue Squad. He has held various offices of the department. In the afternoon a contest developed on the swing devices run by Frankie White. Robert Davis boasted 113 complete circles on the swing. It seemed everyone was having fun. The winners of the Spring Festival Prince and Princess Contest were: Miss Sparkle-Tonya Tripp; Mr. Sparkle-Danny Phifer; Miss Blaze-Erika Daugherty; Mr. Blaze-Tracy Wetherington; and Miss Flame-Alicia French. The evening was occupied with the big Bingo game held at the Bethany Church. Excitement ran through a tired group of citizens as they all pitched in and distributed prizes, sold cards, cakes, hot dogs, and drinks. The big moment of the evening was the drawings for a quilt, won by C. H. Hines, Rt. 7, New Bern; a micro-wave oven, won by Robert Thomas, Rt. 2, New Bern; and the 19" color TV, won by Ron Ashe, New Bern. The micro wave oven was raffled by the New Bern Jaycees. Their goal was $800 with $400 going to Township 9 Rescue Squad and $400 going to Bridgeton Rescue Squad. Everyone was pleased with the large turnout for the 1st Spring Festival and Fireman’s Day for Township 9. The efforts of all the hard work was expected to gross over $7,000. Gary Davis thanked the New Bern-Craven County Board of Education for use of the gym and cafeteria; cooks, the church, the volunteers, and all the people who came and made the day a success. Prince And Princess Contest Township 9 Spring Festival Along with all the other exciting activities of the Township 9 Spring Festival and Fireman’s Day; was the Prince and Princess Contest. The contest was divided into the following categories: Miss Sparkle, Mr. Sparkle. Miss Blaze, Mr. Blaze, Miss Flame and Mr. Flame. The contestants were Miss Sparkle: Candice Humphery, Melissa Phifer, Teresa Blunt, Holly French, Sarah Lynn Neilson, Jennifer Tippette, Mary Anderson, Tonya Tripp, and Tina Wetherington. The winner was Tonya Tripp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James M. "rripp; Mr. Sparkle: Gene Koonce and Danny Phifer, Jr. The winner was Danny Phifer, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Phifer, Sr.; Miss Blaze: Erika Daugherty and Chari Humphrey. The winner was Erika Daugherty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clem Daugherty: Mr. Blaze: Tracy Wetherington and Charlie Humphery. The winner was Tracy Wetherington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alonza Wetherington: Miss Flame: Alicia French, Diana Ipock and Christi Taylor. The winner was Alicia French, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard French. There were no contestants for Mr. Flame. This contest raised $773.47 which will be donated to the Rescue Squad and Fire Company of Township 9. The organizers and sponsors of this contest were Mrs. Elaine French and Mrs. Kathy French.
