The Craven County Extension Service will offer a class in bedspread construction on May 20 at the Extension Office, 509 Broad Street in New Bern.The Class will be offered from 10-11:00 a.m. and again from 12-1:00 p.m. for Learn-N-Lunch. Topics to be covered according to Susan Nobles, Associate Home Economics Agent, include bedspread styles, measurements and construction techniques. So that participants may try their hand at various construction techniques, space is limited; call'Miss Nobles at 633-1477 to register. Learn-N- Lunch participants may bring a bag lunch, beverage is provided. Phar. 50 Attend ECU-Edenton Event Mr. and Mrs. Robert O’Conner, New Bern, were among the fifty persons from North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland that participated in the recent sixth biennial Edenton Symposium, “Southern Folk and Decorative Arts Before the Civil War”. ’The event was co-sponsored by the Edenton Historical Commission and the East Carolina University Division of Continuing Education. Speakers included Carolyn Weekly of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center, Williamsburg: John Bivins of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Winston-Salem: Dr. Charles Zugof UNC-Chapel Hill and Dr. Thomas Parramore of Meredith College. Participants heard lectures on American folk art. North Carolina traditional pottery, early Edenton architecture and furniture of the North Carolina Albemarle area, and toured historic buildings in Edenton. The ECU-Edenton symposium program was co ordinated by Norman Bullard, Mrs. R. N. Campbell, Jr., and Mrs. D. Ross Inglisof the Edenton Historical Commission and Dr. Ralph Worthington of the ECU Division of Continuing Education. Attend Scholars Weekend ECU Phi Sigma Pi Honors Students Robert Zalimeni of New Bern, a computer science major is among the twenty-four outstanding East Carolina University students that were among those honored at the recent annual Founder’s Day Banquet of ECU’s Tau Chaper of Phi Sigma Pi honor fraternity. Seniors Carolyn Sue Bell of Blacksburg, Va. and Donald Allen Riberio of Greenville were recognized as ECU’s most outstanding seniors. Ms. Bell is a candidate for the Bachelor of Music degree and Riberio is a candidate for a degree in biology. ECU alumnus Dr. Thomas Durham, now a member of the ECU psychology faculty, was the featured speaker and recipient of the chapter’s annual Outstanding Alumnus Award. Dr. Jack Thornton, Tau Chapter advisor and a professor in the ECU School of Business, and Dr. Richard Todd, ECU emeritus professor of history and former faculty advisor, were given special awards. Dr. Thornton is currently national Phi Sigma Pi president, and Dr. Todd, national alumni representative. Also presented during the evening were other awards, certificates, and scholarships, including the chapter’s Todd Scholarships. The Todd Scholarship program is the chapter’s major fund-raising project. All funds raised by the members are matched each year by Dr. Todd and his wife, Clauda Pennock Todd. You may also renew your license plate by mailing your renewal card and the appropriate fee to the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles in Raleigh. These fees are used to help maintain and improve North Carolina’s 76,000-mile highway system. Failure to renew an expired license plate sticker is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $100, up to 60 days in jail, or both. For more information, contact the N.C. Local Talent To Appear On Saturday, May 22, the streets of downtown New Bern will be filled with the excitement of the annual Spring Arts Festival. Middle Street and Bicentennial Park, on the Trent River, will become a performance place and an outdoor Art Gallery. Several local arts are scheduled to perform. They include Renee Ward - pianist/singer, Sharon Hayes - Disco/Jazz Dancer, Guitarist, Mark Foltz, and the Brother and Sister Tap Dancing Team of Jack and Donna Waters. Foltz plays a wide variety of music with his acustic guitar, ranging from Bluegrass to Country and Western to Country Rock. He’s played locally at Fairfield Harbor, The Harvey House Restaurant and the Dock House in Beaufort. Mark’s style of finger- pickin music ties in well with a coffee house atmosphere. He’s been playing for 15 years. Foltz is 29 and resides in New Bern. Jack and Donna Waters are the son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack R. Waters of Fairfield Harbor. Jack is 13 years old and a 7th grader at H.J. McDonald Junior High School while his sister Donna is a 14 year old and an 8th grader at H.J. McDonald. Jack and Donna have been dancing together for three years. Currently they are students at New Bern Dance Academy. In the past they’ve performed for the Spring Arts Festival and they’ve appeared on the WCTI-TV 12 Cystic Fibrosis Telethon for 3 years. In addition, they’ve appeared at the Swiss Bear Festival. Their ambition is to persue dance as a career. Dancer, Sharon Hayes is 15 years old and an 8th grader at New Bern High School. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Hayes of Friendly Avenue. Sharon has been a member of the Lollipop Playhouse Group. She has appeared in the WCTI-'rV12 Cystic Fibrosis Telethon for the pasy 4 years. Currently Sharon is the lead singer in a band called P.O. W. She hopes to continue on to be a success in show business. Renee Ward is 12 years old and a sixth grader at the Bethel Academy in Kinston. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Ward of Cove City. Renee has been studying music since she was 6 years old. She’s been studying voice for the past 2 years. She plays for the Cove City Christian Church every 1st Sunday of the month. She sang in the Cove City Fireman’s Day Festival. Currently on Friday nights she gathers with some of her town folk to play and sing country music. Professional performers will also be on hand. Thev include . . . Group Sax (Jazz), Mike Thompson & Nickels to Diamonds Band; Revelation Gospel Singers (48 Blacks from Goldsboro): Desert Fire Dancers (Arabic), Visual Artists - Both Professional and amateur alike will display and sell their works on the sidewalks and streets of the central business district. Craftsmen will also be demonstrating on the grounds of Tryon Palace. Booths will offer contemporary crafts, photography and downcast culturally related exhibits. Refreshments and lunch will be available in Bicentennial Park. The Saturday, May 22, New Bern Spring Arts Festival and Colonial Living Day is sponsored by the Craven Community Arts Council, Tryon Palace Commission and the Recreation Departments of New Bern ana Craven County.
