Page 6, West Craven Highlights, July 1,1982 Sports Highlights SHOWBOAT UMPIRE-Pat Williams knows a batter can be quite embarrassed taking a call strike three but he says he likes to lay iton even more with a bit of a show. Garris Top Batters John Taylor Timmy Jones Scott Garris VSL Batter Chatter Kite’s batter Pete Schramm put a long line drive up to the right-center field wall, over everyone’s head, with teammate Robert Russell on first. Pete went around those bases so fast that by the time he got near third Pete had almost caught up with Robert and while Robert headed home, Pete, in trying to hold up at third, slid over five feet into foul territory and almost tripped up the Kite’s third base coach. i(c4ci(e Alton “Porky” Smith, short fielder for Kite’s, described the perfect slow pitch: “Waist high, slightly inside, and coming through on a straight line. If I got all pitches like that I’d be batting 1.000.” Umpire Bruce Haddock of New Bern says that if the Senators were playing in a New Bern league they would be very competitive but definitely not undefeated.
