Michael, son of Mr. & Mrs. Clyde Hodges; Stacy and Doug, sons of-Mr. & Mrs. Nelson Lee, and Clay, son of Mr. & Mrs. John McOmber are students at West Craven High School. Each year high school and junior high school students are given an opportunity to participate in a legislative assembly to prepare bills that affect youth. If a bill is passed, it will be presented to state leaders. The students get a good lesson in parliamentary procedure and learn what procedure is followed in getting a bill passed. During the three-day event, the students met to discuss a number of issues including youth rights, health and nutrition, substance abuse, education, and juvenile justice. They drew up bills and voted them, and a final report of their actions will be presented to state leaders. Attorney General Rufus Edmisten spoke to the students at the opening session Friday, March 11. State Senator Wilma Woolard of Garner spoke during the Saturday night banquet. The Youth Legislative Assembly was sponsored by the Raleigh Youth Council and by the State Youth Council, a component of the North Carolina Department of Administrat ion’s Youth Involvement Office. Mr. Richard Cannon and his wife, Janis, were chaperons for the three day event.
