Touch your toes.” Ill steady rhythm come these un ceasing commands, followed by tor menting groans of anguish. Again you strive to touch your toes, mustn’t bend your knees. No, it’s not the Saint Mary’s tor ture, chamber, but still worse—Wed nesday’s reducing class. Slim girls who imagine they have excess fat, and others not so slim, line up on the gym field to execute those back breaking calisthenics. Hoping to have that stream-lined figure by next week-end, you persistently go through the vigorous routines. Who in the world could have invented these contortions for the body? Richard Harkness. ‘Oil’s” and “oil’s” are uttered from tight-Iijiped girls overcome with ex haustion. “One, two, over and back, forward—and rest!’" Creech lies jirostrate on the field, and Fulton massages those sore muscles. The next exercise is like riding a bicycle upside down; this makes it twice as hard to do. ^Vfter an hour of exercise you hear, “Class dismissed.” You let out a sigh of relief and limp weakly across the gym field. “Guess I’ll go finish u]) those buns, l^faybe it wouldn’t be so bad to be jilcasingly plump!” Here I am with absolutely nobody to talk to. All these old seniors over in Holt can talk about nothing but Pe-ne-lo-pe and Oddi-zeuse (or is it Ulysses, Kate?) and the capital value and capitalization. Honestly, I don’t understand what it’s all about; wonder if they do. But I do gather from the general trend of things that the Odyssey (better known as the “Oddity”) has some thing or other to do with “Back Home for Keeps” in Trojan War days. As long as I seem to have gotten on the subject of studying, I might as well tell you how relieving it is to get over here where I can hear peo ple worrying about something be sides the Library course. “Cassan dra” Campbell and Bobby Jean seemed awfully per-plexed ’cause so many of those sequels to the Iliad and Odyssey y^eve lost, or were they ? By the way, did you know that al though Homer (did he or did he not exist ?—that is the question, whether ’tis easier to read at once or grad- ually—oh well!) wrote those two Greek things, a man named “Skes- kumskidite” wrote Beowulf. Noav if you don’t believe me, go and ask Ml'. Moore. I was just up on second floor groping around among the “Busy, Do Not Disturb” signs, and I heard the oddest conversation. It went something like this: “I knew more about Ee. than I suspected I would” and “I don’t think I know as much about Homer as I suspected I would.” So I just broke the old sign after about ten “more than I sus pected I would’s” (that punctuation does look odd) and it was Tucker and Wood. I understand it has something to do with two ex-Caro lina now-ensigns. Then Mag and Maria came in with their milk from the infirmary and the comment that their “fwitz iz fwidgig,” and Maria had something to say about her Aveek- end like “are we living!” (Avonder Avhere she picked that up?) Any way, Avhat I’m trying to get around to is that I don’t think these seniors are so very lit-er-ate. Then I heard about Virginia AYil- son’s neAv glasses. They mustn’t be so good ’cause she told Miss Sharpe the other day that her roommate had a package posted. And speaking of glasses, Kate went and found those purple jobs she lost in her oaa'u coat pocket. I think I’d better go OA'er and read up on Vogue. RodAA’ell just AA’an- dered by trying to decide Avhether to Avear a “Ihdletin red” or “tradi tional blue” SAA’eater. Suzie Moore has a ncAv name— “Moses.” That Avas just for the art students’ picnic, ’cause she picked up a staff and led them up-stream to the “Promised Land.” I was just doAAUi on first floor Holt a little Avhile ago reading the latest issue of the San- Quentin News that some senior gets. Gee, it sure seems that Sidney’s ])urty white or-chid is gonna get mighty sooty Avhen she and B. L. go down to Camden on the train today. Wish I could find me an ensign— maybe even one that sends OR CHIDS. I betcha almost cA'erybody sits up next Tuesday (nice time for a fire drill) to hear the election returns. Sister Smith probably Avon’t bother to ’cause she already knoAA's aaLo’s gonna Avin—she couldn’t cA’en re member who Avas running on the other side. Gee, I can’t think of any more just noAA’—besides I’A'e got to go OA'er and get some sleep so I’ll haA'e enough energy to face the Library and track both tomorroAA'. Or maybe I’ll just eat an apple instead. New Books Are Added To Library BeloAV are some of the books that the library has added to its collec tion during the summer. Some of them are a gift of the class of 1944.
