The Belles of Saint Mary’s April 13, Frances Avera Is Chosen S. M. S. Posture Queen Letter Club Sponsors Posture Contest In Assembly, April 4 Frances xivera was chosen 1945 Posture Queen of Saint Mary s in an xissembly Program April 4. Frances is a marshal and, in win ning, took top place for the Sigmas in a contest sponsored hy the Letter Club. Sgt. Isabelle Hayne, Marine; Sgt. xlnn Harris, WxiC; Lt. Bayne, USHE; and Capt. Bowman, ALTS, judged the contest and chose as win ners three Mu and two Sigmas from each class in school. Elizabeth Thomas introduced the judges and announced the events in rhyme, and Barnie White and Margaret Martin, presidents of the two athletic socie ties, held placards to identify the contestants. The Sigma contestants were: Frances xivera, senior; Mary Glen Slater, junior; Kitty Taylor, busi ness class; Margaret Korfleet, sopho more ; and Virginia Mathews, fresh man. The Mu contestants were: Jane Peete, senior; Sally xVnn El liott, junior; Peggy Flippen, busi ness class; Betsy Pou, sophomore; and Kathryn Conn Drew, fresh man. The class winners besides Frances xivera were: Mary Glen Slater, Betsy Pou, Kathryn Drew, and Peggy Flippen. As For Music There are lots of new records out now and two of the best come from our favorite movies. They’re Laura hy Woody Herman from the picture hy the same name (“Laura” not “Woody Herman”) with I Wonder on the back, and Sweetheart of All My Dreams (“I love you, I love you, I 1-o-v-e you”) from “Thirty Sec onds Over Tokyo” by Charlie Spi- vak with Yip, Yip, De Tlootie, My Baby Said Yes on the first. Inci dentally, the first is a Columbia recording while the last has the Victor label on it. “C-a-n-d-y” is one of the most heard words at S.M.S., partially as food hut partially as the song. We like the Les Brown-Capitol record ing and Dinah Shore’s Victor re cording of it; the former has I’m Gonna See My Baby and the latter has the new favorite, lie’s Home For a Little While on the back. If catchy songs are your specialty as well as Fred Fletcher’s, try Ger trude Kiesen’s Decca disk of I Wanna Get Married and Twelve O’clock and All Is Well. But if you lean towards Frankie, just listen to / Begged Her Avith What Makes the Sunset? and If You Are But a Dream with White Ghristmas. Both are hy Columbia. There’s another recording of If You Are etc., hy Jimmy Dorsey with Fidl Moon on a Decca disk. Further recommendations : Just a Prayer Away and All of My Life hy Kate Smith (Columbia), Just a Prayer Away and My Mother's Waltz hy Bing Crosby (Decca), Twilight Time and Sentimental Journey hy Les Brown (Columbia). STUDEKT PUBLICATIOKS’ EDITOKS FOR 1945-46. Sally Ann Elliott, editor of the Belles; Jane Campbell, editor of the Stage Coach; and Mary Pinckney, editor of the Bulletin, pose on the steps of Holt Avhere they will live next year. SCrUCM€KE SLZIE Gee, but spring fever is really hitting me. I’m so-o-o-o sleepy, and I just don’t think I can CA'er look at another book. Anyhow, spring is the time when a young man’s fancy turns—but why doesn’t one turn to me. The only consolation is that men just aren’t plentifully available any more, and it’s hard to date V-mail. Tuck and some others are going to feel pretty desolate Avhen Class 11 leaves State next Wednesday. xinother group of diesel-ensigns have come and went. This manpoAver problem really needs a lot of—of—of something. Oh, I mean consideration or some thing like that. They all seem to be “either too young or too old.” Mary Butler Avas Avith Jackie Stoughton at the girl-break last Aveek, and Jean’s (“he’s only fiA-e years younger than I am”) Huske Avas dating Ann Cutt’s little brother. Then there are at least tAvo seniors over in Holt that are quite taken by men many yeafs their seniors. Incidentally, all of these seniors are really AA'orried about AA'hom to ask to the Junior-Senior. It’s quite a problem: not “AA’hom to ask ?” mean ing Avhich one, but “isn’t there any body I can ask ?” C’est le guerre, M’selles. Miss Lalor’s Wild FloAA-er Garden hasn’t got a thing on 209 Holt; there’s a real, IHe baby avocado pear tree up there. Just go look and see, if you don’t believe me. We Avomen are so fickle. Just this Aveek, I heard cA’ery single senior raving about some man named Tom Jones (KaA’y, no doubt,—or was that John Paul?), but noAv for the past two days I haA'en’t heard one single soul eA-en mention his name. Wonder Avhat he did and Avhere he Avent ? Here I go just rattling on, and I really liaA-en’t a thing to say. It’s time for my daily nap, or maybe I’ll go Avrite a six cent air mail let ter. Did you knoAv that Miss BroAA’ii says that there are almost as many red stamps sold as the usual three cent purple ones? But it’s right, ’cause the least Ave can do is AA’rite. (Prom P. 1, Col. 2) places from Florida to Indiana to Hew Jersey and back again. “Just another xirmy brat, you knoAV,” she explained, xls a result of so much moving Mary changed schools too much to eA'er really settle doAvn, but she did eA’entually graduate from Dreker High School in Columbia. This year Mary has “settled doAvn” not only to thrilling us Avith her unique stories in the Bulletin, but as a member of the E. xl. P. Liter ary Society, Publications Staff, and as Hall President. When inter- A’ieAved, the “Slim” of Third Floor Smedes Avas at a slightly peculiar angle Avashing her hair but she man aged to say betAveen rinsings, “It Avas the fastest election I Avas ever in, . . . and I loA’cd it.” Sally xinn Elliott of Washington, Korth Carolina, AA'as elected as Edi tor of the Belles. Sally Ann at tended Washington High School Avhere she Avas editor of the school paper during her Senior year. IVhile at Saint Mary’s she has been on the Publications Staff, a member of the Sigma Lambda Literary Society, and has serA-ed as a Junior Dance Marshal. When intervieAA’ed Sally xInn looked up from her typcAvriter and grinned, “Please don’t ask me about any elections. I’m writing some up noAv for the Belles.” Ginger Young of Dunn Avas elect ed yesterday as Editor of the 1945 IIandbook. Ginger attended Dunn High School Avhere she Avas Presi dent of the Hi-Y Club and a mem ber of the Beta Club. This year she has Avorked on the Publications Staff and has been appointctl to the Canterbury Club Council for next year.
