Nov. 12, 1946. THE HILLTOP, MARS HILL COLLEGE, MARS HILL, NORTH CAROLINA. Page 7. by jerry marion Sooner or later every champion gets beaten; one man or one team cannot always come out on top. The Lions have lost games. They’ve lost this year; they lost last year, and they were beaten in years before. We can’t win them all, but we can play them all, and we can play them all with everything we’ve got. Last Saturday night the Campbell Camels rolled out a team that looked like the Washington Redskins; but even though they outweighed the Lions, they put out all they had. They blocked hard and tackled like they never did before. They hit the line and drove their superiors back. They lost— sure—but they played hard. That’s spirit. Team spirit, school spirit, whatever you want to call it. But it was the will to win, the will to play for the school and their teammates that made them go through what they did. They came out sore and bruised, and they’ll be sore and bruised Saturday, but they’ll be happy. They’ll be happy because they’ve given their all for school, for team, and for their coach. s a ,e (0 ■id iu- sec- the iped : the rfer- Congrats to Tailback Art AVood!! And here’s hoping that Bob AVood will be another tailback for the Lions in 1965. If heredity has any thing to do with it, little Bob will be a top-notch ball-carrier and punter. * >i: * ♦ ♦ S(5 What with all the rain during the home games of late, the Lions’ band, cheerleaders and majorettes have been forced to remain in their rooms and blow their horns and twirl their batons. When the Brevard eleven comes to Mars Hill for the final engagement of the season, it will be the last chance we will have to see any half-time spectacle. If Old Man Weather will permit. Miss Mary Stringfield’s crew will put on a show well worth the occasion. Keep your fingers crossed. QinU.' The other day the president of the W.A.A. received a letter from Meredith College asking her if we would be interested in being repre sented in the Intercollegiate Playday at Meredith and Saint Mary’s Colleges the week-end of November 16. Miss Biggers was very en thusiastic about our entering the contest; so we are going to send representatives. We will have three for tennis, four for archery, and four for swimming. These girls will be selected from the group proving themselves worthy of entering in the various activities. The members of the W.A.A. are very excited because of the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate sports, and we feel sure that all of you join us in this enthusiasm. Another important event in the near future U our big competitive pep meeting between the C-Is and C-lIs. This pep meeting will occur orC' before the last football game on November 23. E. Scott Owners Mars Hill, N. C. Overcome by sheer weight of forces, though certainly not out played, the Mountain Lions of Mars Hill fell before a strong Campbell college aggregation 19 to 0, Saturday night, November 2, at Dunn, N. C., before more than a thousand spectators who braved the wilds of the Lions third suc cessive rainy game to witness Campbell’s homecoming tilt. The slippery field accounted for the majority of the bad breaks al- loted the Lions by Lady Luck, fluke kicks and fumbles keeping the visitors on the defensive with their backs to the wall for the better part of the game. A short, wobbly punt early in the initial period kept the Lions deep in their own territory for most of the first quarter, while a pair of fumbles in the second stanza put Campbell on the downhill side of midfield, with the Camels scoring one counter and holding Mars Hill to no first downs in the first half. As the second period began, the Camels took over on their own 45, recovering a Lions fumble, and marched the remaining 55 yards, with Williams climaxing the drive with his counter, going over from the six. The placement was short, and the hosts went out in front 6 to 0. Joe Hunt paced the victors in the last half, and it was his game all the way in the third quarter. After driving from their own 40 as the second half was but minutes old, Joe Hunt plunged over from the 7 to add six more points. Hunt added another point by driving over center to make the score- board read 13 to 0. Again in the third period. Hunt scored, this time from the 14 after Norman Stack had returned Art Wood’s kick for 40 yards. The conversion was wide, but the Camels held a commanding 19 to 0 lead. Finally sparking to life in the final quarter, the Lions, lead by Chick Martin, George Cushwa, and Art Wood, marched 45 yards to the Campbell 1 foot line, but were thrown back on an unnecessary roughness penalty. As the tussle ended the Lions were threatening on the Camels’ own 5. Although the visitors were out weighed 24 pounds to the man, a dry field probably would have spelled the difference between victory and defeat, for the Lions played heads-up ball, and the hitting was as hard as any previous blocking and tackling. The Camels were lead by Joe Hunt, Roger Williams, and Norman Stack, thr-ee backfield aces. The Mountain Lions were paced by J. C. Saunders, Jackson Whisnant, Charlie Wilfong, and Bill Ross in the line; and Chick Martin, George Cushwa, and Art Wood in the backfield. The line-ups: Mars Hill (0) Pos. Lions Will Invade Swannanoa Nov. 15 For Final Contest The Lions’ “B” squad will tangle with the Warren-Wilson eleven Thursday afternoon, November 14, on the Swananoa field for the final game of the Mars Hillians. With a record of 2 wins against no defeats, the Lions are going out to make their record a perfect one. The reserves started their sche dule off by defeating the Christ School Greenies 12 to 0, despite being penalized 115 yards during the contest, while the Greenies re ceived no losses whatsoever. In their second tussle, the Jayvees came back in the final minutes of the tilt to defeat Spruce Pine high school 7 to 0, after being out fought and held scoreless during the first three periods. Warren-Wilson will probably field a comparatively strong squad, furnishing the Lions with some real competition and giving them a chance to “show their stuff.” With a backfield composed of Jack Stewart, tailback passer; Martyn Cavanaugh, blockingback and signal-caller; Alton Cole, fullback, good for five yards every play; and Cecil Roberts, fleet-footed wingback, the Lions’ attack should go well behind a hard hitting line.
