Page. Four THK MARS HILL COU.EGE HILLTOP Friday, February 23, 1973 TflEACES ON BRIDGE World Champions IRA G. CORN JR. TEAM CAPTAIN Dear Mr. Corn: Recently you described a bidding sequence in which responder bid one spade to an opening bid of one dia mond with this hand: A AQ J4 V J 10 8^ ♦ 43 ♦ AQ7 1/7 Dear Mr. Corn: Please criticize our bid ding and assess the blame. With a partial we bid these hands as follows and you can see the miserable result. 1/7 I was always taught to show the strength of a hand as soon as possible. Why not a two-no-trump response? In Range Seattle WEST EAST AQIO AAK742 V AQ V K873 ♦ Q73 ♦ - ♦ AKQ965 *3 10 74 West 1 * 2 NT 3 NT Pass Answer: A response in a major suit over a minor suit opening is almost always preferable to a response in no trump. Whenever a fit exists, a major suit game should be preferred over a no-trump game because of the added .control of a trump suit. Standard practice is to bid “up the line” with two four-card majors. Therefore, the preferred response with the hand you cite is one heart. I reported the bidding sequence that actually took place. Made Game Southfield, Mich. Dear Mr. Corn: What is the correct open ing bid with this hand after one pass and no vulner ability : 1/7 *AK 10 9842 V 7 ♦J8763 *- I bid three spades and my partner passed with: Answer: I give West 98 per cent of the blame. A token two per cent goes to East, since he might have bid five clubs instead of four. Here’s a sequence that might get you to the grand slam: 1/7 West East 1* 1 A 2 NT 3 V 3 * 4 * 4 V 5 ♦ 7 * Dear Mr. Corn: Can one pre-empt with two aces? If not, what would you bid with: ♦ A 3 9 8 7 5 3 2 '/7 V A5 ♦ 10 8 7 ♦ - A J V 363 2 ♦ KQ * K Q 3 10 7 3 1/7 Who was guilty? Pussyfoot Salem, 111. Answer: I wouldn’t dream of bidding with your part ner’s hand. With no vulner ability, a pre-empt of three spades promises about seven winners and responder had no reason to visualize a game. My recommendation is to open one spade or four spades with a decided pref erence for the latter. Controls Detroit Answer: I would not pre empt below game with two aces. However, two aces would not deter me from pre-empting at the game level. Therefore, I would bid four spades with your hand. With more than two aces I would not pre-empt because of the dangers of missing slam. Send bridge questions to The Aces, P.O. Box 12363, Dallas, Texas 75225. Include self- addressed, stamped envelope for personal reply. ^1973 by United Feature Syndicate, Inc. Mini-Concert Reviewed by Roy Gullick Mars Hill had its first mini-concert of this year. It was designed to be rock and it was. It was the rock of two At lanta, Georgia groups Brother Bait and Hy dra. Of all the con certs I have been to, the best group is us ually placed last, but this was not true of the concert Satur day night. Brother Bait's two opening numbers were original music which they could have done with out. They were loud and distorted, dis playing little tal ent. Not until the Iflutist began playing a n old TRAFFIC tune, "40,000 Headmen," did the concert improve. The vocal of the bass player was crisp and clear, on this, their best number. Their lead singer seemed to be having difficulty staying with the group. The synthesizer and melotron were d isplayed v/ith versa tility on "Adventur er," a song about a traveler. The best harmony came through on "We Were Talking." It was similar to that on the Beatles "Hello-Goodbye." Brother Bait play ed loud, and to some students too loud and Tarbush Teaches Werkshop by John Hoppie From March 4 through March 10, professional actress Barbara Tarbush will hold a series of act ing workshops in the af ternoons and even- ings for any inter ested students.
