THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 1974 MARS HILL COLLEGE HILLTOP PAGE THREE OFFICE OF THE DEAN "HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES" continued from Page One- ^ti e Shaughne s sy, zookeeper -frustrated songwriter. Montgom- sry play his role in an often low key ed , somewhat cynical fashion that resolves into the kind of head “beating-against-the- Wall frustration by the last act. Pro viding contrast is Pam Smith's Bunny ^iingus, Artie's Mis tress . Miss Smith plays the part as an arch typical Yankee. Brassy, bold, replete with accent, she plays the part natur ally but loudly. In deed, it seems at times almost over powering in such an intimate theatre as Owen. Nonetheless, she provides much of the comedy and her timing is outstand ing. Eileen Russel as Bananas Shaughn- essy is a gem. It is difficult to imagine that she is a freshman as she possesses the poise and confidence of a much more experienced actress. She trans- foms the part of Bananas into a home ly, obviously dis turbed, and often pathetic creature who's brilliant jabs keep Artie and Bunny's relationship slightly akimbo and arouses great sym pathy with the audi ence as the woman who plans They ng pro' enjoy- re. As Artie com ments several times during the play, "Bananas, I miss you so much," which causes no small amo- out of distress to Bunny. The other charac ters play their parts well, particularly Tim Walker as Ronnie Shaughnessy, Marsha Holmes as Corrinna Stroller, and Rick Croll as Billie Ein- horn. The three nuns, played by Susan Poovey, Jane Young, and Stephanie John son, are good with just the right amount of bitchiness and in ternal struggling to make the relation ships believable. Jack Wilkinson as the MP is suitably gruff and he, Walker, and Miss Johnson's slow motion, strobe light ed fight scene, with Miss Russell provid ing a surreal charac ter cleaning up her house is.a highlight of the show. John Gullick and Tracey Neese are the Nurse and Man in White and they look their parts. Altho' the perform' - ance plays extremely well, a few scenes seem to lack the fire that slightly off balance people who are seeking revenge exhibit. 'But this is nitpicking. The end ing of the play is total surprise and well done. It adds to the total confus ion and shocks the audience into what it suspected at times along the way. The audience the night we attended was a mixed age group. The older people in the group, we felt, came expecting a ser ious play and really didn't know whether to laugh or not at pieces that were ob viously hilarious. On the other hand, thes student age group responded like putty in the hands of the cast. There are a lot of laughs in this play, as well as the heavy stuff. We heartily recommend the production to anyone who has not seen it. It is unus ual that such a high- quality production is admission free. But we also recommend that if you do go, appro ach the play with an open mind. TEACHERS LEAVING & RETURNING This Fall by Connie Montague The following teach— ers will not be re turning next year: 1.
