Revealing album since Sweet Baby James." shows a new, more •"ature James Taylor Who seems to have re solved much of the Uncertainty he wrote sang about on his narlier albums. He's ®hill the mysterious, poetic writer he's always been, but the happy influence of ^Rs marriage to Carly ^iinon can be heard throughout the album. Ihe musicians on album are rela tively unknowns who Ware chosen by the PRoducer David ^Pinozza - but a real ^il ~ Star group of ack-up vocalists as sembled itself-Carly R®on, Peter Asher, and rock's other Big oupie, Paul and inda McCartney on songs. Whereas his last album, "One Man Dog," Was a collection of Oats which turned out as , a Very good album, really only con- the good rumors, to not cost $45 sisted of some song ,fragments, "Walking Man" contains ten complete, strong, compositions, three of which could easily make it to the Top 10 as singles, "Walking Man," "Let It All Fall Down," and "Ain't No Song." The extra punch in the background added by Carly and the McCartneys helps to provide a good strong support to songs such as "Rock and Roll is Music Now" and "Let It All Fall Down." "Me and My Guitar" is a whimsical tribute to the instrument that got James Taylor through so much, and "Daddy's Baby" is a love song to the most recent addition to the Taylor family, Sarah Maria, and it celebrates James' new role in life. "Hello Old Friends" is a tribute to James' adopted home,Martha's Vineyard. The last thing most musicians want is to always do songs that reflect their own lives, and this is definitely true for James Taylor. This is the reason behind the decidedly James Taylored version of Chuck Berry's classic "Promised Land." It provided a nice break for him. With this latest album - soft rock's king, James Taylor, makes a very worth while and notable emergence from the shadows he once enjoyed, maybe it was worth the wait! "Lost in a Dream"— R.E.O. Speedwagon On this their fourth albiam with its surrealistic title, the band does a group of songs which stem from the elemental, earthly style of rock and roll. Though the album title seems to suggest a theme or main idea, there really isn't any idea behind the albiim, it's just good rock and roll. However the title cut, which is probably the best on the alb\im, does sorta provede a very fitting finale to the album. The songs range from "being chased and ending up down by a dam"-"Down By the Dam: to flying-"Sky blues." In fact, several of the songs deal with flying. (You Can Fly") and not too strangely- since they do have their own plane. Sly Stone just happened to visit one of their recording sessions and he ended up playing bass and guitar and piano on one of the songs on the alubm - "You Can Fly." "Lost in a Dream" is more of a pro gression from their second record, "R.E.O.-T.W.O." than their third, "Riding the Strom Out," in that it is an up tempo effort in con trast to the almost stylized playing on the third album. So this album is a much more realistic rock and roll albiam which people seem to like better from the R.E.O. Speedwagon Group. Six and four is the present Mars Hill record following the Lions third win in a row going into the last game of the season against Carson Newman on Saturday. "7 and 4 in'74" has been the Lion goal ever since the loss at Lenoir-Rhyne four weeks ago. Apparent ly the team thinks they can acheive it and has proven it in the last two games. The Lion offense has a two game total of 957 yards and 96 points while holding the last two cjpDnents to only 287 total yards and 7 points. This could be the toughest game the Lions have had all season. The offense and defense seem to have solidified but the offense has given away three of the four losses on simple errors; i.e. 12 in terceptions, 21 f\im- bles lost, and 543 yards in penalities. The defense is not completely together. They fail to come up with the toughness that can stop the op ponent when they first get the ball; instead they wait until the opponent gets close to scoring range before they dig in. The biggest fault in the defense seems to be the fault of the line to consis tently stop opponents rushing for little or no gain. This is ev idenced by the fact that the linebackers are the leading tack- lers and assist men on the team and that the limemen are forc ed to persue past the line of scrimage in order to get the tac kles and assists. James Mason and Candice Bergman in a diamond robbery for love's sake. The Awful: Our Time (PG)- Nos talgic piece about a girls boarding school in 1955. Female Sum mer of 42. will love it, will hiss. Carson-Newman has a 4-5 record but that is very deceiving of their ability. They defeated Presbyterian last week 21-14 (re member PC' s victory over the Lions 21-26) They have a versitle attack through the air and in the rush ing department. Their defense is one of the toughest in all of Tennessee, allowing their opponents only 70 yards per game av erage through the aLr. The Mars Hill squad has played well in the last three games but going for the season goal of 7-4 will be tough. In order to win, the de fense needs to be tough on the first and second downs so that they aren't fac ed with the fourth down and 1 yard to go situation. Injury problems are slowly leaving the Lion team’ and this final game will depend a lot on how well the injured players are able to respond. The offense needs to control the ball longer. So far the defense has spent most of the time on the field wearing out the linemen. The of fense is capable of several long sustain ed drives in a game under the poise and direction of Danny Robinson. In order to beat Carson Newman, the offense must gen erate several long scoring drives and in order to generate those scoring drives, must hold onto the football, that crazy shaped piece of lea ther that no one has ever been able bo predict which way it will bounce next. Mars Hill has only defeated Carson-New man once in their history of eleven games. That win came back in 1929. I hope the Lions can put it all together for one final blowout. Congratulations to the Lion team for their first winning season in the history of Mars Hill as a four year school. Best of luck on the goal of "7 and 4 in '74." 7cmd4 Girls boys in
