Marching Lions Excite
Crowds with "Tommy"
From staff reports
Once again, the "Pride of Mars
HiU College," the 1992 Marching
Lions, is presenting a musically ex
citing, visually tantalizing show for
the season.
Generally presented at half-time
for scheduled games, MHC’s
"Tommy" is based on the rock opera
origiualy created by Pete Townsend
and the classic rock band "The Who."
"The Marching Lions continue to
be a focal point of excitemnet and
energy for our college football games.
Members of the band take their re
sponsibility very seriously and have
spent endless hours in full, sectional
and individual practice to refine the
1992 show so that it will prove to be
very enjoyable for the entire campus
community.", Pete LaRue, the direc
tor for Mars Hill College bands, said.
The 1992 show was designed and
arranged by Dr. LaRue, with the per
cussion scored by Mr. Joey Scott
Forbes. Soloists include Brian Ed
monds, Shane Marcus, James Parton,
Michelle Galyean, Amber Luckadoo,
Stephen Whisnant, Chris McKinney
and Joe Gilreath. Also featured are
our marvelous mellophones and sen
sational sousaphones.
"We would like to thank all of the
many faithful supporters fromaround
our entire campus communtiy, for
their continuing support and appre
ciation of the work of our Marching
Lions. We sincerely hope that every
one will get to and see our band, and
have an experience which should
prove to be both musically rewarding
and personally enjoyable.". Dr.
LaRue commented.
"Tommy": The Story
"At the close of World War I,
Tommy was born to a fatherless
home. His father, Captain Walker,
a fighter pilot, had been listed
missing in action... presumed lost
forever.
Captain Walker, however, un
expectedly returns to find his wife
Mary, with another man and mur'*
ders him. Tommy, shocked by this
violent crimes closes his eyes and
ears to the world becoming
Deaf...Dumb...and Blind....
Through a series of adventures
and misadventures, Tommy was
exposed to the darker side of life
by interesting characters such as
Cousin Kevin^ a local gypsy,
known as Acid Queen, and his
wicked Uncle Ernie....
Tommy’s parents tried in vain
to cure him of the illness which
they had created. But, the boy con
tinued to respond only to his unage
in the Mirror and his frenetic tal
ent of playing pinball. His pinball
ability by this time had earned him
fame and a large following. This in
turn, led him to meet a local lad,
known as the Pinball Wizard....
After many trials and tribula
tions, his parents finally discover a
doctor who finds no physiological
problem with Tommy. Frustrated,
Tommy’s mother smashes the Mir
ror. The shattered glass cuts
through Tommy’s dark and silent
world. He is cured!
With this cure comes a new en
lightenment. Tommy believes him
self to be the new messiah. His
sermons bring forth the multi
tudes. Ultimately, his followers
rebel against his power. Once
again, Tommy is isolated from the
outside world....
Excerpts from the lyrics:
Listening to you, I get the
music....gazingatyou, I get the heat.
Following you, I climb the
mountains... 1 get the excitement at
your feetl
Right behind you, I see the milr
lions....on you, I see the glory.
From you, I get opinions....
from you I get the story.
