Hilltop Columnist Mike Wachtendorf’s Babble On Rolling Stone and Bob Dole, Conservatively Speaking, Of Course Hiiltop Coiumnist Amy Webb’s Spider’s Webb To Break-up Or Not To Break-up Adapted from the October 18,1991 issue of The Hilltop. I would encourage you to drop by Ingles soon and pick up a copy of the new Rolling Stone (Or. Ore on the cover); flip it open to the table of contents; get excited over the interesting article titles; and then find out how cheezy the articles really are. This isn’t the first time I’ve attacked the journalistic efforts of this segment of pop culture. The slant on things is just - is just cheezy! This issue has several swell articles including one about the nation’s first all-gay fraternity Delta Lambda Phi. Wow!! That’s one close brotherhood! It also has several other articles, but I haven’t read them completely yet. One article that I did read in its entirety was “Freddy Krueger Does D.C.: Meet Bob Dole, Nightmare on Capital Hill.” How - how creative! October is the official “Break-up” month. The reason why is something very few people know, but we as college students can probably come up with some logical reasons. Could it be the changing of the season from summer to fall, or could it be the falling of the leaves? Maybe the first cold front or Fall Break causes us to panic and search for freedom, kind of like the fight or flight response we learn about in psychology class. All that we know is that the next thing we find ourselves doing is singing “So long Dbde Lou” or “I don’t love you anymore John Boy.” Now, if your relationship means a lot, you’ll hang on. You’ll fight and press on to keep that special person. Today it is so hard to find love. Sometimes it seems to grab you when you least expect it. Love is so precious that just a few people tend to capture this golden treasure. All of this is wonderful and great, but to love someone else you must first love yourself. For the sake of time and space. I’ll only write about what I already know a bit about - Bob Dole. As senate minority leader, Mr. Dole has one of the rougher jobs on Capitol Hill: he must constantly defend Republican principles while appearing to be non-partisan. There is a strong possibility that he will be the party’s next presidential nominee in 1996, but for now he’s just doing his best to preserve the social system he has grown old with - a system which he helped build. In his attempts to preserve this system, he has been ridiculed for tenaciously blocking many of the programs of President Clinton. His frequent use of the filibuster has annoyed his democrat counterparts. They’re not too happy about his resourceful “pulling in” of disgruntled conservative democrats either. In the political world, ^ you can’t count on partisanship, what can you count on? See Page 8 /' i' giving us a new health care plan? Yeah! You know, I kept wondering why we were getting a new cafeteria. This year’s Homecoming King and Queen were chosen a bit differently. Members of the senior class were only eligible fbrthe honor, instead of any dassmen. Carol Jo Howell is queen for a year. She is an intematbnal business mayor from Michigan. The King for this year is Peter Alexander. He is a communicatbns major from Qarisville, Tennessee.
