SEVERAL SENTENCED TO ROADS ■ ( This week in Recorders court there were sevieral cases which had been suspended. In each case the defendant was given a road sentence. The majority of the cases were larceny and assault. On November 17, 11)31 John I.owe was adjudged guilty in the Recorder’s Court on a warrant charging him with larceny and judgment war entered that the de fendant enter in a bond in the sum of $2UU for appearance the first Tuesday in every month for two years and show that he has be haved and that he has not violated the law in any respect. The de tenilant entered a plea ot guilty in answer to the warrant charging him with larceny and receiving. He- was judged guilty and ordered to serve 8 months on the roads. On March 24, 1931 William Hai slip entered a plea of guilty in Recorders court to a warrant charging him with violating the prohibition laws, and judgment that the defendant serve G months on the roads, suspended on condi tion that costs are paid and de fendant appear on first Tuesdays The defendant was adjudged guil ty in a warrant charging him with an attempt to break and enter a storehouse of Allsbrook’s market.) He was ordered to serve 6 months i on the roads. Isaac Murphy was held for sjoeding and was remanded to Juvenile Court as he is under 1G years of age George Smith was tried for speeding and reckless driving. lie was sentenced to 6 months in jail to be assigned to work roads. The sentence was suspended for two years on condition that the de fendant give bond in the amount of $200 for his appearance on the 1st Tuesday of every month for two years and piove by officers in Roa noke Rapids that he has been of j good behavior and his reputation! improves and pays the costs in this case. I hugene r.eavans was tried tor driving a car while drunk. He pleaded guilty. The defendant was fined $50 and costs. His license to drive was revoked for 3 months. Silas Watson, Robert Tan and George Wilkins were held for gam bling. All pleaded not guilty and all were found guilty. Silas Wat son was given 0 months in jail to be assigned to work the roads, to run concurrently with another sentence. Robert Tan and George Wilkins were sentenced to three months on the roads each. Silas Watson was tried for gambling. He was ordered to start serving his six months pail assign ed to work loads sentence, at once Henry Richardson and Joe Bose man were held for assault. Both pleaded not guilty and both were found not guilty. J. J. Carlisle was held in a charge of liquor. He pleaded not guilty but was found guilty. Pray er for judgment continued on pay ment of costs. J. W. Aokins, William Haislip, Thurman Hardy were charged with an attempt to break and enter. Ad kins pleaded guilty. He was given 4 months on the roads suspended on condition he pay 1-3 of costs of this case. Capias to issue on mo tion of solicitor. Haislip and Hardy pleaded not guilty altho both were found guilty. Haislip 9 months roads capias to issue on motion of solicitor. Hardy six months roads. Walter Taylor was charged with giving a worthless check He pleaded guilty. Prayer for judge ment continued on payment o f costs in this case as well as in another. Roosevelt Ends Cruise l Democratic presidential nominee, Franklin D. Collier and Mrs. Howard Cherry and James Coley spent Sunday at Ocean View Mrs. Andrew Walker was tried for larceny. She pleaded not guil ty and was found not guilty. George Whitaker was tried for assault. lTe pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 90 days on the roads. The case of B. W. Oliver, who operated a car without proper li cense, was continued. The cases of John Thomas John son and Ed Spruill, both of whom were tried for assault, were consol idated with other cases. Rosa May White, John Thomas Johnson, Ed Spruill were tried for affray. Johnson and Spruill plead ed not guilty while Rosa May White was remanded to Juvenile court. Johnson and Spruill were found guilty. Prayer for judge ment continued on payment of costs as to Johnson and that he pay $2 to Spruill,, prosecuting wit ness. Preacher Spruill was also trie ! for larceny. He pleaded not guilty but was sentenced to 4 months in jail to be assigned to the roads. The case of Daniel Page, who was held for a worthless check, was continued. John Harris, held for disorderly conduct wap remanded to mayor? , court. The case of Willie H. Jones was continued under $250 until Aug. 2. Frank Nowell, A. D. W. De:ml ant called. Capias and continue 1 The case of Thursto Price was continued until further orders of the court. MRS. T. E. WHITLEY FUNERAL Mrs. T. E. Whitley, age (13. died Thursday afternoon in the lo ■al hospital after an illness o f wo months. Funeral services onducted Saturday afternoon at 1 o’clock in the Church of God by Rev. Ike Dickens. Interment was made in Cedarwocd Cemetery. Mrs. Whitley is survived by six children: Walter and Bill Whitley ■nd Mrs. Catherine Sykes of this city, Mrs. Lelia Lee of Rocking ham, Mrs. Feronia Hale of Bur gaw, Mrs. Bertha Seaboe of Dan ville, Ya.. and 22 grandchildren. H. S. Loy, local manager of Leggett’s Department Store was a bunness visitor in Charlotte on Wednesday and Thursday. Mrs. J. C. Connor and child ren, Mrs. W. L. Hall and son, spent unday in Lawrenceville, Va., vis ting friends and relatives.
