World’s Fair Visitors to See Inner
Workings of Modern Elevator
1 III '■■■■! I — — - ■' ■—
Nearly everyone has had the
suppressed desire to peep down
an elevator shaft to see the in
side workings and the opportun
ity to do this will be furnished
visitors to the Otis Elevator ex
hibit, at the top of the Sky Ride
at the Century of Progress in
Chicago.
Through shatter-proof glass
panels, visitors may look straight
down into the elevator hoist
ways. They can watch the il
luminated elevator car as it drops
rapidly away into space, down
into the pitch black shaft until
it is a mere pin-point of light 600
feet below. Then, after a pause,
they will see the steel cables be
gin streaking upward again. The
light will grow brighter, slowly
at first, and then more rapidly
until the top of the car suddenly
.looms into view and comes to
rest at the top landing—exactly
at floor level.
The automatic control equip
ment, the safety devices, the
powerful hoisting machines that
operate these elevators are the
same as those installed in the
world’s greatest skyscrapers
But of the millions of people who
ride in office building elevators
every day, few are privileged to
see the elevator machine rooms.
In the Sky Ride towers, how
ever. these machine rooms will
be open for inspection. This will
be the first time the public has
been invited behind the scenes to
see what makes an elevator
work.
The motor-rooms at the tops
of both towers are the Otis Ele
vator Company’s contribution to
the Century of Progress Expose
tion. They are the highest ex
hibits at the fair;

How to train BABY’S
BOWELS
Babies, bottle-fed or breast-fed,
■with any tendency to be constipated,
would thrive if they received daily
half a teaspoonful of this old family
doctor’s prescription for the bowels.
That is one sure way to train tiny
bowels to healthy regularity. To
avoid the fretfulness, vomiting,
crying, failure to gain, and other ills
of constipated babies.
Dr. Caldwell’s Syrup Pepsin is
good for any baby. For this, you have
the word of a famous doctor. Forty
seven years of practice taught him
just what babies need to keep their
little bowels active, regular; keep
little bodies plump and healthy. For
Dr. Caldwell specialized in the treat
ment of women and little ones. He
attended over 3500 births without
lost of one mother or baby.
