WILL ADD EMPHASIS \ TO PROTEST BY BIG MEETING NEXT WEEK _- I Arch Enemies Of Tax To Speak At j Halifax Meeting ^ Roanoke Rapids Association Enjoys -OrcSsrly Meeting This Afternoon MOTORCADE TUE. There will be a county-wide mass meeting of merchants and consumers at the Halifax-county Court House next Wednesday evening, April 18th at 8 P. M. Willard Dowell, executive-secre tary of the North Carolina Mer chants Association, and J. Paul Leonard, who holds a similar po sition with the North Carolina Fair Tax Association, have ac cepted invitations to address the, assembly there. These two men are recognized as arch-enemies of the three-percent general sales tax, and undoubtedly will have an in teresting message for their audi ence, and suggestions of what steps to take to rid the state of what all merchants and most con sumers consider an “unfair and unjust” tax. A motorcade oi some 10 or more automobiles, with represen tatives from every town in the county, will tour the county on Tuesday announcing the meeting. Handbills will be distributed, window cards placed in the vari ous stores and public places, and every nook and corner of the county will be thoroughly combed advertising the event, it is plann ed. The “indignation meeting” at Halifax is the outgrowth of a meeting last week, attended by some 50 or more merchants from all over the county, at which time plans for the huge mass meeting were made. It is planned that at least ten cars from Roanoke Rapids will join the motorcade Tuesday, in an effort to advertise the meeting extensively all over the county. The cars will meet in Halifax at nine o’clock, and before the day is over, it is planned to visit eve’fy wayside store and cross-road in the county. The merchants in a placard, advertising the event, de clare they are “tired of talking, and are determined to do some Relief Director MINNEAPOLIS . . . Mrs. Annie D. Olesen (above), National Enter gencj Belief Director for Minnesota is the only woman director among the twenty eight state directors who aet as personal representatives of President Roosevelt. thing.” This meeting might well be 1 ~o '.jvied as one of the first important steps. Every consume) is urged to attend. _ Plan To Sponsor Fashion Show By The Womans Club At a meeting of the, Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association Thursday afternoon, President C. C. Shell announced that plans were under consideration for the association to sponsor a Fashion Show, which will be promoted by the Woman’s Club at an early date. The meeting Thursday after noon was the first general one since the Association has been re organized, and a full-time secre tary employed. There were some 35 or more members in attend ance at the meeting, and several important business matters were discussed. Mr. Shell, presiding at the meet ing, told of renting offices in the Imperial building, and of the ar rival of new filing equipment, etc., for the credit rating bureau, which promises to be one of the most im portant phases of he new associa tion. Miss Lillian Belle Jenkins has been employed as full-time secretary, and all members of the retailers organization, as well as prospective ones, are urged to visit the offices and acquaint them I’VE HEARD THAT CAMELS USE FINER TOBACCOS, AND IT IS CERTAINLY TRUE THAT SINCE I STARTED SMOKING CAMELS I DON’T FEEL NERVOUS AND IRRITABLE ANY MORE. I ..i selves with the routine there. It is thought that the fashion Show will definitely go over, and that it bids fair to become an an nual event. Since organization of the new merchants group is still comparatively in its infancy, Mr. Shell stated participation in th~ fashion show would not be limited to merchants who actually have paid memberships, but issued an invitation to all ready-to-wear, clothing or shoe merchants to dis cuss plans with him or the secre tary. Merchants Will Also Sponsor A Musical Program Also, plans were, discussed for the Merchants Association to spon sor a Music Festival, to be held at the High School Auditorium one Sunday afternoon early in May. Tentative plans are for all musical organizations in the city to participate in the program, which includes he High School Glee Club, Mixed Chorus and Or chestra, the Rosemary Concert Band, the Choral Club, and R. L. Martin’s organization. The recent program given by the newly organized Choral Club, under the direction of Steve Lips comb, was so well attended, and such interest manifested, that it is thought the public in general would welcome the repitition of such a venture, and the Music Festival to be sponsored by the merchants would be on a much larger scale. It is planned to arrange a pro gram of an hour-and-a-half’s du ration, or longer, to which the pub lic in Roanoke Rapids and sur rounding territory be invited. Plans will be worked out for the event, and definite announcement made later. It is possible that, if a success, this would become an I' says — "Don’t ffec>ii , discouraged aEsefnS; enlarged pores,'qso | my 1*0RE CRfcAM" A / '"Do you think that Pore cream will actually correct this condi tion?” a skeptical client asked Miss Arden.
