I WILL BE FEATURE ATTRACTION NEXT WEEK AT PEOPLES Loretta Young, Jean Parker and Charles Boyer Open In “Caravan” MUSICAL FEATURE Special Christmas Cartoon By Walt Disney Booked For Wed- Thurs. By HOWARD HANCOCK These enlightening movies! For ft long time it has been our trite observance there is a beverage made from grapes that is a dis tinct aid to music, both instru - mirstal and vocal, but not until “Caravan,” Monday-Tuesday at - rtaction next week at the Peoples, <Md we realize muoic is a great assistance to grapes! The inhabitants of the region of Tokay, Hungary, famous for its wines, be'.Lve that if the gypsies come and play their vivid melo dies during the harvesting of the grapes, the nectar therefrom will be fit for the gods, it seems. The story of “Caravan ’ takes us to Tokay at grape harvesting time, and a happy time it is. Crnar.es Boyer and his gypsy band show up to supp y the tinkl ing inspiration. It is about the time that Loretta Young, por - fraying a countess, is returning fo hear h.r papa’s will read, that the story opens. Everything her father possessed goes to the dau ghter—if she will marry in 24 hours. One of the Baron’s suggests he has a fine son who would like to help Miss Young collect the re ward of her legacy. Loretta gets rather peeved at the suggestion, as she has nevqr seen the son, and in a huff, enters into a marriage contract with Boyer, the gypsy gent. She decides to “go gypsy” with a bang, and there is much singing and dancing among the grape vines Phillips Holmes is the son, whose father has proposed the union with Miss Young, ami quits his metropolitan circles to dash down into the country for a look *it this hick that his father wants him to marry. He thinks she has pop-eyes, maybe even pop-knecs. But, when he gaz:s on the dazz' ing Loretta, and she gets a squint at his military bearing — well, sir its t'me for a certain gypsy lad to fiddle heart-broken tunes “Caravan” is an imposing film MHiapjBS “CHAINED” Juan Crawford’s latest pic - lure, “Chained” will he shown Koanoke Kapids audiences soon it was announced today by Lyle M. Wilson, who is in Charlotte hooking films this weke. Oth er outstanding productions on their way here include “The Barretts of Wiin pole Strict,” and “The Merry Widow.” spectacle with lifting melodics, and shot through with a decided gaiety. It marks the, Hollywood lebuts of Charles Boyer, French star, and Erik Charel', European 1 rector remembered for his “Con gress Dances.” Loretta Young was never more beautiful in her role of the heroine, and the east is further augmented by Jean Park er, Louise Fazenda and Noah Beiry. With the world in the present shape it is in, with every fellow grabbing for himself, it is really refreshing to see such a pleasant lot of big-hearted folks as r p - resent the cast of ‘ Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch, ’ Wednes - Jay-Thursday feature attraction of next werk’s Peoples program, e;ven if it is only in the audible cinema. Naturally theres a villian, even in this hem ly tale, but he is } hardly one of those old nasties that make your fingers itch to throttle his scrawny neck. Youi heart simply goes out to that mo therly Mrs. Wiggs (whose part is taken by Pauline Lord). ZaSu Pitts takes thje ro e of that help ful “Miss Hazy” while the sweet good Miss Lucy is enacted by Evelyn Venable. Kent Taylor giv es a satisfactory rendition of that fine fellow, Bob Redding. In the p cture, it appears that Heaven answers the prayers that go up, even from a lowly cabbage patch. Its all very heartening, particu larly in the midst of this Christmas atmosphere. Poor little Jimmy Wiggs wast es away and dies, which makes you very sad, but one sort of gets the notion he was a weak litt e fellow who would have found lift) too tough anyway. Then there is that Mr. Stubbins, a comical cuss, whose part ig taken by the ‘ one and only” VV. C. Fields. Mr. Fields is an answer to a prayer (Miss Hazy’s prayer for a man) but after getting a real good look at hint} especially after watch ing him eat, you sort of doubt that Heaven sent him. It’s very nice, too, when Mr. Wiggs comes home to has fami y after having been missing for three-years. But what Mrs Wiggs wants with an old pair of pants like that around the house is hard to understand. Still, if he pleases Mrs. Wiggs, thats neither youi business nor mine. The producers have done an ad mirable pi.ce of work in bringin. the ‘‘Mrs. Wiggs ’ tale to the scr en. True, its still hokum, but it isn’t crude and a large dash of ginger has been injected bj Pauline Lord, noted stage star, who makes her screen debut in the picture, and by the adm.rable work of Mr. Fields. And to add a perfect touch to the Wednesday-Thursday bill at the Peoples, Wait Disney’s color cartoon ‘ The N.ght Before Christ mas” will be shown. This short feature is one of the most e a borate to come fromth e studio of the noted artist, and has been booked for over six months bj the local house, in order it could be shown to Roanoke Rapids aud T • ^ ^ J a Since we’ve been buying pictures 1^1 a* V/ I't I for Roanoke Rapids have we rec m ^ * ommended - A Complete Program for Children r 1P ■ 1 We earnestly recommend for your approval III the Wednesday-Thursday program at the “ Peoples.
